Sonic 粉丝 Characters Article: Requests are a lie!

This isn’t exactly one of my normal rants where I talk about how to fix something, because I think it’s just too short an obvious. I’ll include any tips I come up, but for the most part I’m just complaining, and really, I think I have at least a half-good reason to.

If anyone notices, I don’t ask for requests often. When one comes around it’s rare I’ll answer, for one very good reason. THEY ALMOST NEVER DO IT.

It doesn’t matter if I’m first, last, reminding all the time, 或者 never at all; it seems that so many people forget. Now that’s not to say that they don’t remember, but that almost never happens, and when they do finish it, only two times come to mind when they did it without either me having to remind them enough, 或者 simply remembering on their own.

This happens with Art-trades too! I have NEVER ONCE had an Art-trade (at least that I remember), where the other person finished the picture. Requests are one thing I… GUESS! At least with requests they can pull the “I don’t get anything out of this, so I’m not going to finish it.” (Which I reply with “Then why did 你 say yes in the first place?”) With Art-trades however, when I finish your pic, and I post it, then send 你 the URL, 你 seeing it and going “Hey! Awesome! Thanks!” is nice, and I won’t complain there, but let me remind you, 你 HAVE SOMETHING TO DRAW TOO!

I remember one Art-trade where it got to the point where I had to go to the person’s DA account (because she had not replied to my reminders on 潮流粉丝俱乐部 in a long time. And I know that sounds really naggish, but with the time in between each reminder… let’s just say it took up about two 或者 three months.) and remind them. And what did I get? I got a “I’m busy with some other stuff now, and I don’t appreciate 你 reminding me all the time.” If those things had come before what was needed I would be fine, but there was no way THREE MONTHS of waiting was because of SO MUCH 更多 TO DO! Why do I say that? AGAIN, Why would the person say yes to the thing if they didn’t have the time?!

Even when I’m not the one suggesting it, it happens. My most 最近的 art-trade was suggested 由 the other person, and I did my part, but I STILL haven’t gotten anything back.

Now I don’t know how long it takes for people to draw, 或者 how much time they have, but with me, I can draw a hard-worked-on, detailed and thought-out drawing in two days. I understand my drawing program and skills aren’t the best, but all that would give another person is an extra 小时或者 so!

When I’m asked to draw something I GET RIGHT TO IT! When I have the time I will spend it drawing the request, with maybe a few breaks in between (which I rarely do.) I usually have it done at MAX a week after being requested in the first place! I’d just like the same courtesy back please!

Now I know people would bring up things like School, 或者 Jobs, 或者 family problems, or… SOMETHING important, and I’m completely fine with that. I understand that making ME 或者 ANYONE else a drawing is not as important as those things. But the excuses I get have NEVER been those things. Most of the time it’s other drawings, 或者 just plain laziness/forgetfulness.

And I know that it gets really stressful when 你 make a thing titled “FREE REQUESTS!”, and storms of people pop in, but a lot of people the amount they’ll do, and even then, sorry, but 你 still don’t have an excuse! NOT drawing the requests for those people who were waiting is unfair to them. If you’re busy drawing another request before going to the 下一个 person in line, FINE! Nothing wrong, but 你 HAVE to do it in the right order!

And something else that might help is if 你 UPDATE THE PEOPLE ON THE PROGRESS OF THE ART! I don’t like, I doubt anyone else likes, having to go up and say “Um sorry for bothering you, but when is the thing going to be ready?”

At this point I don’t even put faith into requests from just about anyone. But if 你 expect me to just ignore all the times I waited for someone to finish their end of the bargain in an art-trade, IT WON’T HAPPEN! I took time to make something nice for you, and I tried hard, so could 你 at least 显示 me the same kindness and actually do what 你说你 would?!

I apologize for all the whining. I hope I didn’t overdue that too much. In short, people, when 你 are about to agree to something, not just drawings, make sure to think through IF 你 have time, and when 你 do agree, MAKE IT A PRIORITY. Doesn’t have to be the NUMBER ONE, but at least ONE of them.

Tooootie fyi requests are one of my pet peeves so expect a long winded rant that will probably just go into why I hate requests in general. I know I'm probably going to get a lot of hate for this, but what ever. Obliged definition: Make (someone) legally or morally bound to an action or course of action. This needs to be said. AN ARTIST IS NOT OBLIGED TO DO YOUR REQUEST. I will say it again for good measure. vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv AN ARTIST IS NOT OBLIGED TO DO YOUR REQUEST!!!!!!!! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ ESPECIALLY IF THEY DON'T OPENLY OFFER THEM AND YOU ASK THEM. Art time doesn't take 5 minutes, it takes time, and a LOT of it. I never get something decent done with in one sitting. (Oh, and for some of my better pictures it takes at LEAST a week, not measured in days or hours, measured in WEEKS. My best friend is even worse, her art time is usually a month!) People PAY people for their time. With a request, what exactly are they getting paid with for their time? Oh that's right, NOTHING. If an artist (especially when it's a good artist) accepts your request you're lucky that you even got that far. As I said art takes time and you know what, artists are people too- they don't always have it. Shit happens and when they thought they had time originally, oh well look now they don't. Maybe the character is a character they don't WANT to draw, and when they accepted it they didn't know they where going to get a character with awful colors, or an overly-detailed not-fun-to-draw-design, and believe me, that happens. I can think of two times that I took a commission and I HATED doing it. One character was so dark that I had to modify the reference just to SEE the darn thing; the other one? Well. I just flat out hated its design. I hated doing it, and I wouldn't have done it if it was a request. I actually closed off commissions shortly after doing those! I had the obligation to draw that stuff that I didn't want to draw because I was PAID FOR MY TIME. (Even if it wasn't even a dollar..) With a request, again I repeat THEY HAVE NO REASON TO DO IT. NO, ASKING THEM TO DO IT IS NOT AN OBLIGATION. YOU ARE NOT LOSING ANY THING IN RETURN. IT IS NOT A FAIR TRADE. Yeah sure, they have to "wait" for it, BUT that isn't anything. Seriously, it isn't- at least when compared to the time wasted with drawing. You know what else is might make them not do the request? Motivation. I still somewhat like it and would like to finish it. BUT. I have little to no motivation to do so, AND IT'S A PICTURE OF ONE OF MY FAVORITE COUPLES FOR PETES SAKE. A PERSONAL PICTURE FOR MY FRIEND AND I. Pictures that are requests are a bigger victim of motivation killing. Why? Because half the time the artist DOESN'T WANT TO DO IT. I don't EVER ask for requests because I find it DISRESPECTFUL to the artist. Yeah, disrespectful. I said it. Why? Because as stated before art takes time. Asking for a request, at least to me is saying that "I think your time is worthless, and your art isn't good enough to be paid for. Draw me something" The ONLY exception to this, and likewise the only time I will ask someone for a request is when they post a journal or something flat out saying "I WANT TO DO A REQUEST, SEND ME A CHARACTER TO DRAW" That is because the artist WANTS to use their time for that. AGAIN, as I said that STILL doesn't make them OBLIGED to do it! For the reasons I stated above! Also, did you EVER consider that MAYBE the artist only said "yes" because they WANTED to be nice?! I seen it happen many times before! They don't want to draw the art, but don't have the balls to say no to someone because they wanted to avoid a conflict! YES! THIS HAPPENS! I have seen MANY anonymous asks sent to an artist I look up to on tumblr saying "Help! I accepted a request and I really don't want to do it! What should I do?" She always says the same thing "Dont do it". Don't feel like you have the right here just because an artist says yes to a request because news flash, YOU DON'T. Art trades you have a right to complain with because they ARE obliged to give you a drawing, and that is something I can relate to. An artist I really like asked to do an art trade with me and I got it done within the next week. I'm not even on her To-Do list. Same applies to commissions. I ordered a 100$ plushie one February for my friends 16th birthday in July. My friend is turning 18 this year and the person hasn't started. ALSO, By the way, art program has NOTHING to do with how skilled you are. THERE ARE AMAZING ARTISTS WHO USE MS. PAINT. But that's another rant for another day.

Evolia-Wulf "I'm one of those said people who 'forget'. However, I feel as if its more of a result after doing buttloads of requests in the past for people here on Fanpop and Deviantart. People ask and ask and ask out of me and like an idiot I say yes and start forking them over. It use to be a constant thing with me and a fast process. Now you're just lucky if I bother chalking up a scratch. "For some of those people who 'forget' I think its mostly because, like me, we've given so much and got nothing in return because we're too damn wimpy to ask that we just don't see the point anymore. Its just not fun to draw someone elses's recolor or their OC, especially when you do and they're not happy about it. Its not fair. Therefore we don't put effort in it like we use to. "Now, WHY we post questions open and ask to do requests is because, and I'm speaking from personal experiance, we're actually in the mood after this long 'depression' and then end up losing it again after a few days. "Others that don't do nearly most the work are either just lazy and hold out the 'gimme gimme gimme' hands. Its all rather stressful when you think about it. Some people want and give nothing in return, some people are just the opposite. "In the future Tak, do some research and see if they do loads of requests before ordering. That way you can avoid the over workers."

seuris My option is that, simply, don't accept requests. Why? Because, you want me to work my ass of for your character, and getting nothing for it? No thanks. That's why I only allow Collabs, art trades & commissions. I only do requests if I am sick or I am bored and I do them right away, only couple of them. If way too many askes them, I won't do it. I think peoples should realise about that, artists does requests for free. You get it or you don't get it and that's it. It's very stressful also, when you make request and you know you don't get nothing for it and you still work for it and the person, goes for you everyday "Is it ready?" "Gimmie, gimmie!" "I wanna see it already!" It's very very annoying and it makes more stress. With Art trades, I always ask for a person, which character the artist wants to draw for me. Why? Because then the artist have more fun to do it. I had learn it, that peoples does art trades together if they enjoy doing them, so goes for Collabs too. Who wants to draw stupid recoloured OC for other? Also, the skills are important. If you work again, for many many hours for a trade, the other one should too work for it more than just only 5 minutes. T_T'' I make list of everything I need to do, for commissions art trades and collabs, but NEVER for requests. Because I do them, if I want to do them and that's why I never promise to do it. Simple as that. Because you're the one who works for it! OC you was suppose to do as a request and it dosen't inspirate you to draw it? Don't draw it. Say: "No, sorry, I can't do this." You should enjoy drawing with others! Not make yourself forced for it. What I mean here is that, I only do requests if I am for a mood of that, nothing more. And because I wanna practasine more.
