One rapidly growing concept is animal cruelty.
Animal cruelty simply means cruel unwarranted treatment of animals. Such treatment generally has a single point program - to subject 动物 and sometimes pets to unnecessary harm and pain. One major type of animal cruelty is torture.
Neglect and abandonment are the most common forms of companion animal abuse in the United States.
Scientists estimate that 100 species go extinct every day! That's about one species every 15 minutes.

Animal cruelty can be either deliberate abuse 或者 simply the failure to take care of an animal. Either way, and whether the animal is a pet, a farm animal, 或者 wildlife, the victim can suffer terribly. Don’t despair, though—anyone can take steps against cruelty.
People with emotional problems may beat, shoot, 或者 stab 动物 或者 set them on fire. Those who abuse 动物 are very likely to be violent to other people—even their own family—too.
Neglect is not giving an animal the right food, water, shelter 或者 vet care. Because their misery goes on for so long, 动物 who die of neglect can suffer just as much as 动物 who are harmed on purpose.
All U.S. states have animal cruelty laws, and 47 states treat some forms of abuse as felonies. Farmers and researchers can do cruel things to 动物 that other people can't do legally, but all states have some protection for pets like 狗 and cats.
