She checked on her children first. Always them first. The dim light of the dawn washed a soft glow into the nursery. The warm aura enveloped the 10 月 old twins in their side-by-side cream colored cribs. Amara and Kai remained fast asleep, undisturbed. Of course they were. Even if a rough wind jiggled a locked window, the 3-inch steel shutters would drop into place. No doors from the outside could be opened, unless the retina and bio scanners measuring multiple signature recognized the individual trying to enter the house. There was no getting in without permission. 天使 was not the one who had constructed the fortress, but she was forever thankful that her mother's family had acquired it.
The girl shut the door softly. 下一个 she glanced into the bedroom were Venus and her newborn, Sakurako, slept. The Japenese woman had come to the Weston mansion upon Angel's invitation 2 weeks before her daughter was born. 2 months later, Venus and Saku had remained in the peace of the 首页 as permanent guests.
The last she checked on was Gabriel, but only because his room was closest to the attic. He was so still in sleep that 天使 had a hard time telling if his chest was rising and falling beneath the pile of blankets. Yet as she ventured into the room, she could better hear his breaths. They were even and reassuring. Gabriel had barely made it into 床, 床上 the 前一个 night before passing out. 天使 hoped he would recover quickly, and they would get a chance to talk before he had to leave again. Finally secure in the safety of the residents of her home, the owner of the house headed up the attic stairs.
The short flight opened up to an airy room with an arched ceiling and porthole windows. Floor lamps were spaced around the room in promise of optimal light. Two easels were set up then, the rest of the paintings leaning against the walls and 楼梯间 railing. The first held a landscape of the backyard. It's glittering crystal lake, guarded 由 a thick forest of fir trees, had been one of Angel's 最喜爱的 paintings to complete. She wanted to let it sit on its easel a little longer before putting it against the 墙 with the others. The 秒 easel was occupied 由 a current project for her Art History class at the New York City 大学 of Arts and Sciences . The canvas was still blank. She had about an 小时 to start the painting before Saku awoke, and possibly caused the twins to cry for clean diapers and breakfast. 天使 went to make herself a cup of coffee from the miniature coffee/tea bar she had assimilated in the corner of the attic. But she felt the eyes on her and froze.
She whirled around, the mug in her hand flying toward the shadow in front of the first easel. It shifted, one hand shooting out to stop the cup in midair and the other clicking on the closest lamp. 天使 just barely reverted her high kick to avoid clocking her brother in the face.
"What.. What the fuck, Declan?!" 天使 whisper-yelled.
"Me? 你 chucked a cup at my face," the man pointed out.
"You scared the heck out of me!" She huffed and crossed her arms, regarding Declan warily. "How did 你 get in here?"
"The house recognizes me too, little sister, remember?"
"Right," she muttered. He was obviously amused at pissing her off, so she forced herself to a calm. "Why are 你 here?"
"Relax, Angie. Why don't I explain myself over some coffee?" He held out the mug and his sister accepted, going back to the coffee maker. Even if her infuriating brother made it his job to keep her on her toes, 天使 knew she, her children, her friends- all of her family, could feel 安全 in the Weston mansion. After all, it was their home.
