Kowalski hurried over to the window and peered out.
"What do 你 see?" I asked.
"Mostly people running. There's Marlene. She's down there."
I helped Private to his feet. "Maybe we should go down and--"
That's when the explosion struck. Sure, there had been those other two, but this one was big. 或者 it seemed big, seeing as the bomb had dropped straight through the open window.
The wall--the one with the window--exploded out into the street, along with the part of the floor Kowalski and Rico had been standing on. Me and Private were blown back against from it, slammed against the adjacent wall.
I was knocked momentarily unconscious. When I came to, the sounds of screaming filled my ears.
I hurried down the stairs to the street, with Private following. My eyes searching for Kowalski. There were no cars. Why is it that in times of panic, people always abandon their cars?
I spotted Marlene kneeling 由 a body, a moment later realizing it was Kowalski. I ran over and crouched 下一个 to him, placing my ear over his chest.
In place of his normally steady heartbeat, I heard nothing.
Quickly, without thinking almost, I straddled his stomach (I had to do that to reach) and started pumping on his chest.
Two pumps, then breath into his mouth. Two times.
I guess two was the magic number, because I only had to do that two times before his eyes cracked open.
"Skipper?" he asked, noticing I was straddling him.
I quickly scooted off and surveyed the crowd for Rico.
There he was, standing with some strawberry-blond chick, leaning against the 墙 of a half-decapitated building. They were talking. Small talk, it looked like.
So there I was, bringing Kowalski back to life, being thrown against a building and being knocked out, taking care of Private, and in the meantime, he was flirting.
I jumped up and marched over to him. I was determined that as punishment, he would not get the girl.
I tapped him on the shoulder. He turned.
"Attention, citizens of New York!" The voice boomed through the city. I searched for the source.
"The attacks have been identified as some sort of unworldly beings. Fleeing is hapless, as they are attacking the entire world. No one knows their intentions, but they seem determined to kill us."
I found the speaker. He was standing on the roof of a building, holding a microphone.
"There's nothing we can do but wait for them to leave, 或者 wait for them to kill us all off."
On this positive note, the speaker exploded.
That's when everyone freaked. Before, it had been a bit 更多 melancholy, them thinking that all they had to do was get to New Jersey 或者 their grandmother's house and then they would be safe. But they were attacking the world. Nowhere was safe.
Besides, most of us had just witnessed our first death.
There would be many 更多 to come.
