He's very similar to Regina in this sense, he too has closed his heart to true love. He wouldn't allow himself to completely let Belle's love in. He shut her out and sent her away.
Very sad.

I think Rumple has very, very few things in common with Evil/Regina.
He has gone through some serious traumas, true tragedies. My heart breaks for him..
