At least I hope they did. If I was a student I would have. Snape was particularly cruel to Harry yet I reckon after Harry found out what Snape had done he definitely respected him. He named his youngest son after him and Dumbledore.

Personally, I loved Snape. The complexity, the things he had been through, he's awesome that way xD

But let's not forget that Snape did nasty things to students and had favored favoritism. He's cruel to most Gryffindors (if not all), and always bully Neville around. In the eyes of the students, he's nothing more than an evil teacher, and it may take some time for them to accept that Snape was really the good guy.
