I even headcanon that as a child Mulan dreamt of marrying one of Emperor's sons( whom her father personally met in military) who later was exiled from China for crimes( Hans is just saint compared to that guy).

The definition of kickass I've found:
1. forceful, vigorous, and aggressive.
2. extremely good or impressive; excellent.

2 definetely applies to her, 1... partially at most. She is powerful but not aggressive. I find Jasmine, Esmeralda, Meg, Tiana, Merida( for sure!) and maybe Anna( not sure here) more aggressive.

Basically. I will only like ambition if it is paired with kindness. In the case of most of the modern DPs ( Tiana, Merida, Elsa, Anna, Moana) the kindness part is missing, and the ambition part is the only thing I seem to see a whole lot of. I don't consider the characters above to be "kind."

Esmeralda is assertive and aggressive, sure. But living in poverty will do that. However, Esme still manages to stick up for those being bullied, which means that I am automatically a fan of her. Only a kind and brave person will step between someone who is being bullied and the attacker.

^ I don't argue Esmeralda has great traits like courage, compassion and strong sense of justice. I just listed heroines who are less demure than Mulan.

Kindness is everything to me. Also dreamer, ambition and quick thinking.

@Adelital: Okay. I see what you're saying. I find Esme extremely relateable. I would not call myself demure. And though I admire Mulan for certain things, I am not exactly like her in my personality. I am not afraid to ruffle feathers. I am definitely more Esme and Ariel.

^ I definetely agree than of Disney female leads you are most similiar to Esmeralda and Ariel and that you are not particularly similiar to Mulan( not her opposite( you are both brave people) but not particularly similiar either).
