To be fair to Ariel, she did not leave for a man, she left because her father destroyed her collection of human objects which represented a different life that she wanted. So in effect, the destruction of her objects is her father rejecting her (even though he doesn't intend to) so she goes to Ursula in a defiant, emotional state. The problem with Ariel though is that she doesn't seem to have learned her lesson, in fact, King Triton has more character development as he learns to let go of his daughter. There's no scene in which Ariel realizes that he was only trying to protect her. With that said, Ariel was designed to be a more proactive model instead of the earlier princesses who had things happen to them and had little to no agency. There are problematic models in the DP lineup but I don't think any of them are bad.
There are some minor things like hitting others with unusual objects, but nothing big. XD
Sure some of them have their moments, but overall, they are all fine role models.
Real people have flaws, so it matters that NONE of the Disney Princesses are "perfect." I keep hearing people shout "Ariel" as being the worst, but I don't think she is. They can scream until their throats are raw, but Ariel is still the one who paved the way for all the rest of the Renaissance and Modern DPs,
Some may make wrong decisions and are not perfect people but nobody is perfect. After all the DP line up is created for the princesses to be role models of little girls. Also Ariel didn't just leave for a boy. She left to see the human world she longed to know way before meeting Eric. The fact that Triton ruined her collection and that she saw Eric and the other human people just made her want to see the human world more.
Cinderella doesn't stand up for herself, I mean she owns the estate, and is 19 so she could legally live on her own, and yet, she lets herself be abused! And Merida, I LOVE her, but at the beginning she is a bit of a brat, though she does learn her lesson and change.
I think, just like any real life role model, every single DP has bad aspects about them. But ultimately they all have qualities anyone should aspire to have.
Rapunzel and Elsa definitely. all the DPs have redeeming qualities but Elsa does nothing redeeming in the movie, has the morally worst song ever, and Rapunzel glorifies rebellion and turning back on what is right. I think the others are right- it's more that some are better role models than others.
and no, Emma, Cinderella does not own it. You seem to think she's living in modern USA or something? her stepmom owns it. she cannot stand up to her abusers without being punished but in fact does when she can. and what a horrible thing to say. you do not "let" yourself be abused. Does Rapunzel "let" Gothel tease her and hold her captive? Cinderella has many good qualities. You can dislike her of course but why pretend she's the worst? there are many worse things to do than "not stand up for yourself" like, um, being a brat, being selfish, being unkind, etc. You're pretty biased.
