If anything Ariel would get defended more for being a girl. People often like girls who buck the system. But i don't think boy-Ariel would get less hate.

A man risking his life and giving up his world for love is "romantic and chivalrous," while a woman doing the same is viewed as weak, lovesick, codependent, anti-feminist, etc.

Me? I don't hold Ariel wanting to go to the surface or turn herself human against her. The movie goes to great pains to establish she already wanted those things BEFORE she saw the prince. I do, however, hold her personality against her. Even before seeing Eric or deciding to go become human, I found her repugnantly selfish, inconsiderate, self-serving, etc.
