Damon was and is the better man. in 1864 he was the kind of guy that Elena would want to be with. Stefan was selfish and just like Katherine. He was a monster for a very longtime after he was turned. Damon wasn't. Damon wouldn't feed on people. He thought it was heartless and wrong. So damon ended up changing because he had too. Stefan tries to act like the better and more caring brother but he never was. just because he is now doesn't make him better.
