Everyone would expect the most graphic, bloody season in ‘American Horror Story’ past to go out the same way it came in — but there was no bloody orgy going down this time around.
. Ok, that’s a lie, we all know Ryan Murphy can make you cry with one simple note, look, or line. On the season finale of
, things were less gory and more mushy — in the darkest and most brilliant way possible. (Yes, spoilers ahead.)
slices Liz’s throat — so from there, we flashback, knowing the horrific end.
Let’s start with the cameo from season one, the best,
. When Liz (the fabulously talented (Denis O’Hare) can’t understand why Tristan (Finn Wittrock) won’t show himself, Iris (Kathy Bates) tries to help. She hires no one else but Billie Dean Howard — yes, Sarah Paulson‘s psychic character from
. And yes, that means she is once again portraying two characters. Billie connects Iris with a pancake-making Donovan on the other side, and Liz with Tristan — but he refuses her.
To make matters worse, she then finds out she has terminal cancer; her family is there at the hotel, so she decides she wants to die there where she can live with them forever. So, who appears to do the deed? None other than The Countess (Lady Gaga). “You were always my fondest creation. I wanted to be here to help you transition. One last time,” she said, then slit her throat. In her death, Liz was reunited with Tristan, who had lied to her in the connection — he just knew she had more living to do.

I mean, that couldn’t really be a more happy ending for Liz, for The Countess, etc. but of course the show did still have to have a dark side. Skip ahead to Devil’s Night of 2022, where a now-dead John (shot by police) brings where the usual suspects. However, the family gets an oddly happy ending — John, Alex (Chloe Sevigny) have raised Scarlet just as a normal young woman.
The end of the episode was one for the books — the Countess finds a man at the bar on Devil’s night. “You have a jawline for days,” she says. Did you love the finale?
