Ewan McGregor: I wasn\'t asked to be in Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Ewan McGregor appeared as young Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi in Star Wars Episodes I, II and III.

Ewan McGregor has revealed he wasn’t asked to reprise his role as Obi-Wan Kenobi in the new Star Wars movie.

The 44-year-old starred as the younger incarnation of the Jedi, also played in his later years by Sir Alec Guinness, in Episodes I, II and III, but will not be appearing in JJ Abrams’ latest instalment, Episode VII, The Force Awakens.

Ewan said at the premiere of his latest film The Last Days In The Desert, at the Edinburgh Film Festival: “I’m looking forward to it as much as anyone else. I’ve got no inside information about it, I’m afraid – I wasn’t asked to be in it.”

He added: “I’d be happy to do the story from Episode III where I finish up and Alec Guinness started.”

The Scottish star has signed up to play singing maitre’d-turned-candalebra Lumiere in Disney’s live-action remake of Beauty And The Beast.

He revealed: “I got to sing Be Our Guest, which is a wonderful song to sing – in a French accent, which is not as easy as it sounds. But it was fun, yeah, I really enjoyed it.”

Ewan will appear alongside Emma Watson as Belle, Dan Stevens as the Beast/Prince, Luke Evans as villain Gaston and Josh Gad as Gaston’s sidekick Le Fou.

Sir Ian McKellen is playing singing clock Cogsworth, while Emma Thompson is to voice Mrs Potts. Kevin Kline will play Belle’s father and Audra McDonald will portray Garderobe.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn filmmaker Bill Condon will direct Beauty And The Beast, which is due to start production in May at Shepperton Studios in London.
