Katherine had a sexual relationship with the younger Salvatore brother, Stefan, and chose him over Damon completeley. Even though she was secretly in "love" with Damon Stefan was the guy for her. At the end of the latest episode, Katherine shows that she genuinely loves Stefan, and wants to be with him again.

This pushed Damon over the edge and causes him to kill Elena's brother Jeremy, earning Elena's hate even after Jeremy was revived because of the ring John gave him before he fleed town..
