Edit: After two years of the show being on air, I only grown on it enough to gain the interest of Fuli and Kion, the only two characters I like from the show and consider canon characters.
I didn't really understand what they did with Kiara's personality. She acts very responsible and proud about her future as queen in this, whereas in TLK2 she was troublesome and didn't even really want to be queen, claiming "it's no fun". I get that they likely wanted her personality to conflict with that of Kion's, but I think if I'd been involved in making The Lion Guard I'd have had Kiara's original personality still intact, with her trying to concentrate on Simba's lessons about their kingdom but constantly getting distracted. That said, I do like how Kiara and her two new friends all seem to have different personalities, though I think there's much more to learn about them.
I like the overall message of The Lion Guard, about pro-diversity and Kion being inclusive to his non-lion buddies. The audience could perceive this as Simba getting his first taste of learning to accept others (a lesson that hits him hard at the end of TLK2). People could also choose to think of The Lion Guard as being the team that finally chased off the hyenas from the pridelands for good (in Simba's Pride, Nuka mentions that the hyenas fled the pridelands - he doesn't mention when this happened, although considering the way the first movie ended we all think we can guess).
So yeah, storyline and setting-wise it's kind of all over the place, and the writers didn't try too hard to have it make complete sense. But as I said before, I do like many of the characters.
-The animation. I for one love the new art style.
-Kion is really cute.
-"Tonight We Strike"
-The two new lion cubs.
-Fuli.
The Meh:
-Bunga and his theme song.
The Bad:
-Diamond Kiara.
-Everything else.
I also hated Kion's friends (Well I didn't "hate" them but you know). They were really bad characters.
And Rafiki was also a weird character in this one.
Kion was definitely the best part of all this.
I actually really liked the songs though... Especially Kion's song and the Hyenas "Tonight We Strike"
But I'm going to keep watching it... Because I can't get enough of TLK
- Disney has finally created a male cub option in the animated format, for those who can't accept that it's Kiara. Not sure if that helps anyone, though.
- Kion's design is nice, except for the tattoo.
- The premise itself is interesting. (I mean, that there would be a specified defence force unit to defend / protect the Pridelands.)
The bad:
- Magical roar and tattoo.
- Kion is a Gary Stu character. I don't hate him, as he had potential as a personality. and could be improved in AU fanfiction I just hate how he was executed in his official canon.
- Butchered characters like SImba and Zira.
- The premise executed unrealistically. (It would be fine if Kion was a mature teen or a young adult and if the Guard was formed by lions only, and if there was no Roar of the Elders.)
- The drawings and animation are too low quality for The Lion King franchise.
- It's NOTHING like the first film, even though it's supposed to celebrate its 20th anniversary.
- It literally farts on the most emotional and meaningful scene in the first movie, on the key scene without which the story that started this all would not exist. It tributes human suffering with a whimsical childish call-back. I still can't believe Disney did that.
Summary:
Too many, too major issues in the show. And too big of an insult scene to the first film. I can't enjoy it the least bit.
