The networks are trying to withhold as much as they can in the interest of their own profit. If the writers don't take a stand here, what will the studios try to take away next?

And the actors and director's contracts are up in June so whatever happens in these negotiations will have a huge effect later. This isn't just about the writers. This is setting the stage for what will happen in the industry for decades to come. If you don't believe me, read up on what caused the last writer's strike, 22 years ago. Let's just say, the internet is the new VHS.

Writing is the most underated part of the show. it doesn't matter how good the actors are if the writing sucks. but i could not see Michael Scott or House being played by somebody else because Steve and Huge make you believe thats how they really are. House is an egotistical genius who makes witty comments and Michael just wants a friend. but that would be totally different if the writing wasn't like that.

Shows like Heroes and Lost which bring in the masses with their engaging twists and involved storylines would be nothing without the writers.
Without them, we get a tv screen full of big brother and survivor.
And honestly, I'm being hypocritical by watching shows on the net, the very thing they are protesting, but I fully agree they need compensation for that.

I believe that the writers get paid plenty. And because of them going on strike, people on the production crew, who aren't paid nearly as much, end up being fired.
