, the 34-year-old actor is ready to step behind the camera and jump into the director’s seat.

Talk about exciting news! “We begin shooting episode 17 tomorrow and I’m directing. My head is full of vampires,” he announced via twitter on Thursday, February 4, along with a playful wink and the hashtag “The Originals.”

Although this isn’t Joseph’s first behind-the-scenes foray — he directed and wrote the 2013 short film

, which features his wife, actress Persia White — it

the first time he’s found himself at the helm of a television episode. In accepting this creative challenge, he joins Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, and executive producer Julie Plec in the list of fang stars interested in exploring different roles on set.

On that note, a huge congrats goes out to Joseph! We know that he’s a huge fan of sci-fi and horror, so we can’t wait to see his artistic vision come to life in the dark, supernatural world of

“Chill out. I’ll provide guidance,” his cheeky co-star jokingly wrote, in response to the update.
