I grew up with Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter, so it took me a good half an hour to stop thinking about "What If" in wizard-ing terms (yet there is a little bit of magic in the film!). I would always put one additional star to a not Hollywood production of romantic comedy, starting a girl (and a boy) next door - Zoe Kazan (is wonderful) and Daniel Radcliffe (a bit stiff, but you quickly get used to it) make an unlikely, but ultimately VERY likeable couple.

"What If" is about medical school failure Wallace (Daniel Radcliffe), whose relationships were always out of luck. And then he meets the aloof Chantry (Zoe Kazan) an animator with a serious boyfriend. They become friends, and the next hour and a half we are wondering, could there be something else? Of course, the story-line is predictable, but the dialogue and the occasional falling out of the windows keeps you entertained.

"What If" (2013 Canadian-Irish co-production; 102 min.; original title "The F Word") is a rom-com that brings the story of Wallace (played by Daniel Radcliffe) and Chantry (played by Zoe Kazan), both in their mid/late-twenties. They meet at a party and talk to each other easily, and in fact hit it off nicely. There\'s just one problem: Chantry is in a 5 year relationship with Ben (played by Rafe Spall). In a parallel story line, we also meet Alan (played by Adam Driver) and his new girlfriend Nicole (played by McKenzie Davis), as well as Chantry\'s younger sister Dalia (played by Megan Park), who herself is recovering from a bad break-up. The only question really is: will Wallace and Chantry get together or not? Of course I\'m not going to tell you, you\'ll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.

Couple of comments: first, "What If" is directed by Canadian Michael Dowse, and he does a great job bringing this rom-com in a believable and enjoyable way. The film is set mostly in Toronto, and Dowse takes full advantage of the great skyline and overall city that is Toronto (a small part of the movie is set in Dublin, Ireland). Second, the film stands or falls with the chemistry between Radcliffe and Kazan, and fortunately they pull it off. It\'s great to see Radcliffe blossom in his post-Harry Potter career. Last year I saw him excel in an okay-but-not-great "Kill Your Darlings". Now this. You can see his confidence growing with each post-Harry Potter role he is taking on (he also stars in "Horns", due for release in a few months).

Doesn\'t fall into step with all the other rom-coms out there - very refreshing!

What If, starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan, is without a doubt one of the best romantic comedies I have ever seen. Dubbed as the best rom-com since 500 Days of Summer, I would take this one step further and say that it is not only the best film of its genre since, but that it is even better than 500 Days of Summer.

What If tells the story of two friends Wallace and Chantry who meet through Chantry\'s cousin and Wallace\'s best friend, Allan (Adam Driver). The two get on from the beginning but Wallace is shocked when the night ends and Chantry asks for his number whilst also mentioning that her boyfriend of five years is waiting for her at home. Undeterred by this, Wallace still wants to be friends and the two become the best of friends. Chantry and Wallace are basically inseparable and their best friends Allan and Nicole are convinced that the pair are in love but both Chantry and Wallace continue to deny this and Chantry is still with her boyfriend, Ben. As work and life begin to get in the way, Chantry and Wallace remain friends but things become more complicated...

Whilst What If sounds like your typical rom-com and to be fair, it does have the same framework as most other romantic comedies, there\'s something very different about this film. It is both incredibly moving and funny at the same time. Although there were lots of clichéd moments within the film, the plot doesn\'t fall into step with all the other rom-coms and there are lots of twists and turns to accompany every cliché making this a really refreshing rom-com. Towards the end of this film I found myself with tears streaming silently down my cheeks as I felt like I was feeling the characters\' pain with them and what I was watching was so beautifully sad I just couldn\'t help myself.

Loved the film at the cinema - can\'t wait to own the DVD so I can watch it over and over again!
