I just wanted to write this to highlight some awareness for the cruelty that is inflicted on chickens and turkeys.
I like chicken meat a lot. Right now, at this very 分钟 I can smell roast chicken and it's making my belly rumble. Chicken is the most 流行的 meat in the world, with even so-called 'vegatarians' making exceptions to eat it. Yet many people are not aware, 或者 often choose not to be aware, of the cruelty that is inflicted on these birds before being served up as dinner. The chickens that go towards KFC and many other big suppliers are known as 'broiler' chickens and thousands are crammed up, right as I type, in ridiculously tiny cages, often even shared with another chicken, who will peck and scratch that chicken because it is so much in pain that it takes its pain out on someone else in its demented state. These chickens, which are just young, growing birds with soft bones, are fed growth-enhancing chemicals which make them grow so fat that their leg 识骨寻踪 buckle and snap under the strain. Every 谷仓 of cages rings with the tortured crows and shrieks of these birds; then at the end of it all they are killed in the name of 'value' meat.
In short, it's like a chicken hell.
This was inflicted on battery 或者 egg-laying hens previously, (though they weren't 给 growth-enhancing chemicals) but now they are only allowed to put them in 'enlarged' cages if they aren't free range. Yet the meat industry still goes on, and 给 the popularity of chicken meat it doesn't look like it will ever stop either. Well, that is, unless the public acts. What some people conveniently choose not to understand is the concept of 'consumer demand'; basically, if 你 buy cheap chicken, thinking 'well, it's dead now', 你 have just put money in the pockets of their tormentors to buy 更多 birds to cram in cages. If 你 buy free-range chicken meat and eggs then the chicken will have had a good life and the money will go to making sure free-range becomes 更多 popular.
Yes, free-range is 更多 expensive. It also tastes better though; cheap chicken is injected with water to make it appear big and juicy in the supermarket, meaning that when it is cooked all the water comes out of it and is much smaller, with pappy, comparatively tasteless meat. I have told my 老友记 and family to buy free-range and avoid eating meat that isn't free-range wherever possible. It might be a tad 更多 pricey. But when 你 consider the life that that bird could have had if 你 had bought the alternative...to my mind, those few extra pounds are worth it.
