(Helen's mother: "I hope that 汤 is gone when I come back in there!")

The 日 Helen gave Martha dog her alphabet soup,

something unusual happened.
The letters in the 汤 went up to Martha’s brain instead of down to her stomach.

That evening, Martha spoke.
(Martha: Isn’t it time for my dinner?)

Martha’s family had many 问题 to ask her. Of course, she had a lot to tell them!
(Helen: Have 你 always understood what we were saying?)
(Martha: 你 bet! Do 你 want to know Benjie is really saying?)
(Helen’s father: Why don’t 你 came when we call?)
(Martha: 你 people are so bossy. Come! Sit! Stay! 你 never say please.)
(Helen’s mother: Do 狗 dream?)
(Martha: 日 and night. This morning, I dreamed I was chasing a giant meatloaf!)

Alphabet 汤 became a regular part of Martha’s diet, and the family had a wonderful time surprising people. Walking the dog was always good for a laugh.
(Martha: Yo, Rinty! Good dog. How’s the flea problem?)

They ordered 比萨, 比萨饼 from a different restaurant every night.
(Martha: How much do I owe you?)

They taught Martha how to use the phone.
But this was a mistake.
(Martha: Hello. Acme Meat Company? I’d like to make an order…)

Pretty soon, 更多 than 比萨, 比萨饼 was being delivered!
(Helen's mother: But I didn’t order any BarBQ.)

Family and 老友记 were amazed.
(Martha: Please pass the carcass.)
(Martha: Wanna go for a walk, granny?)

Although there were those who doubted,
(Boy: There is no such thing as a talking dog!)
Martha always had the last word.
(Helen: Speak, Martha.)
(Martha: WOOF! Just kidding.)

But there was a problem: now that Martha could talk, there was no stopping her.
She 说 exactly what was on her mind.
(Martha: Why is that man so fat?)

She made embarrassing comments.
(Martha: Mom 说 that fruitcake 你 sent wasn’t fit for a dog. But I thought it was delicious.)

And, she always told the truth.
(Helen's father: WHO DID IT?)
(Martha: Helen did it.)
Occasionally she wondered why her family was often mad at her.

But she kept on talking. She talked through everyone’s 最喜爱的 TV shows,
(Martha: I’ve seen this program. Want me to tell 你 what happens? The giant reptile did it, and the little kitten gets blamed….but it’s OK because Ninja Woman and Enviro-Man team up to save the little kitten and of course the world and…)
except her own.

She talked while they were trying to read.
(Martha: There’s a poodle over on Circuit Street. I’d really like to play with. He’s small but, what a dog! And speaking of small, I’m sure you’re all curious about the early days of my life…)

She talked and talked...
(Martha: I was born in a back alley to a poor but loving mother. Although she was a mixed breed, Momma was determined to raise us 小狗 right, to give us a solid background before she went out into the world at eight weeks. Even before our eyes were open, Momma would say: “You’re dogs! Not cats! Don’t ever forget that!” Blah blah blah blah blah. I still remember the rules Momma gave us to live by: (1) Beware of two-year-old humans with clothespins. (2) Under the 表 is the very best place to be during a meal. (3) Never mistake your human’s leg for a tree. (that was for my brothers, of course.) And… (4) If it’s black and white and smells funny, it’s not a cat. Don’t chase it. And while we’re on subject, I understand Cat, but I can’t speak it. Wait…where was I? Oh yes….)
and talked...
(Martha: Did 你 know that my mother gave me a name before 你 did. She named all of us puppies. I was three. My sisters were One, Six and Seven. My brothers were Two, Four, Five and Eight. I never did like Eight very much, but Six was a lot of fun… Blah Blah Blah. I’ll never forget my father’s face when he saw all us puppies. “Boy that’s a lot of puppies!” he said. What a funny dog! And when I was two blah blah blah.)
until her family could not stand it and said, “Martha, please!

“SHUT UP!”

“What’s wrong?” asked Martha.
“You talk too much!” yelled Father.
“You never stop!” yelled Mother.
“Sometimes,” 说 Helen, “I wish 你 had never learned to talk.”
Martha was crushed.

The 下一个 day, Martha did not speak. She didn’t ask for her dinner, 或者 to go out. She offered no opinions, but lay quietly beneath the 厨房 table.
At first her family enjoyed the silence, but after
a while they became worried.
“What’s the matter, Martha?” asked Helen.
Martha didn’t answer.
Helen’s father called the vet.
“There’s something wrong with my dog!” he said.
“She won’t say a word.”
“Is this some kind of a joke?” snapped the vet.

Helen offered Martha bowl after bowl of alphabet soup, but Martha had 迷失 her appetite for letters.

Martha’s family wondered if she would ever speak again.
Then one evening when her family was out, Martha heard the sound of glass breaking.

“A burglar!” she gasped. “I better call the police.”
She carefully dialed 911.

But when she opened her mouth to speak—
(Martha: Yip! Arf! Arf! Arf! Arf! Woof!)
Martha hadn’t eaten a bowl of alphabet 汤 in days!

Martha raced to the kitchen. She barked. She growled. She tried to look ferocious.
(Martha: Grrrrrr)

The burglar wasn’t frightened. He picked up a pot from the stove.

“Uh, oh,” thought Martha. “It’s taps for sure.”
But to her surprise, the burglar put the pot down
on the floor in front of her.
“Here, doggy,” he said. “Have something nice to eat.”
The burglar smiled as he closed Martha into the 厨房 and went back to work.

“Dumb dog,” he said. “Lucky for me 你 like alphabet soup.”

When Martha’s family returned, they found the police removing the burglar from their house.
“How did 你 know he was robbing our house?” asked Helen.
“We got a call at the station,” 说 the officer.
“Some lady named Martha.”

“Good dog, Martha!” exclaimed her happy family.
“You’re so right,” 说 Martha.
Now Martha eats a bowl of alphabet 汤 every day. She’s learning what to say and when to say it, and sometimes she doesn’t say anything at all . . .at least for a few minutes.

Have 你 ever seen dinosaur skeletons in a museum?
I have.
I visit them all the time.
I went again yesterday.

I saw APATOSAURUS.

I saw CORYTHOSAURUS.

I saw IGUANODON and TRICERATOPS.
I like to say their names.

SCOLOSAURUS was just where I had left it.
And TYRANNOSAURUS REX looked as fierce as ever.
TYRANNOSAURUS used to scare me.
I still can’t believe how big it is.
Just its head is almost twice my size.

I’m not afraid of 恐龙 anymore.
Sometimes I call them “you bag of bones” under my breath
I can spend hours looking at them.
I used to wonder where they came from and how they got into the museum....

Run outside to play in the warm summer sun where the 草 grows tall and sunflowers fill the fields.

Baby bears play just like you.
They grow fat and round on fresh summer 草 and learn to catch their first 鱼 晚餐 down 由 the riverbank.
Summer is time to learn and to grow.

Baby mountain 羊 learn the safest path to summer meadows. 小鹅, gosling, 高斯林 wings grow stronger, their voices louder.

Up in the trees, the songs of spring suddenly soften. 莺 mothers and 莺 fathers, busy feeding their young, have little time to sing. Hummingbirds sip nectar for themselves and catch bugs for their tiny...

“It’s there! It’s really there!”
The rotting hull of a ship has been found on the ocean floor. Within the wreck lies a fabulous treasure.

The story of each underwater treasure hunt is different, but each goes back to the same beginning…the sinking of a ship. The story of the hunt for the Nuestra Señora de Atocha, a Spanish galleon, begins the same way.

THE ATOCHA
The Sinking

It is 1622. The Atocha with its fleet of sister ships, makes its way back from South America to Spain. The Atocha is a treasure ship, laden with gold, jewels, silver bars, and thousands of coins.

“Good morning,” 说 Wilbur.
“You’re late,” grumbled the director.
Wilbur had only ten 分钟 to get made up, go to Wardrobe, and finish learning his lines.

“Hold still,” 说 Maxine, the makeup woman. “I have to make 你 look strong and smart. It isn’t easy, 你 know!” she joked.
With practiced skill, the Wardrobe Department transformed Wilbur into the Bionic Bunny.
First they snapped on his costume with the built-in muscles.
They tied his bionic sneakers, which made him taller.
They strapped on his bionic wristwatcher, which supposedly let him see anything anywhere.

WINTER MORNING
由 Ogden Nash

Winter is the king of showmen,
Turning 树 stumps into snow men
And houses into birthday cakes
And spreading sugar over the lakes.
Smooth and clean and frost white
The world looks good enough to bite.
That’s the season to be young,
Catching snowflakes on your tongue.

Snow is snowy when it’s snowing
I’m sorry it’s slushy when it’s going.

SNOW
由 Karla Kuskin

We’ll play in the snow
And stray in the snow
And stay in the snow
In a snow-white park.
We’ll clown in the snow
And frown in the snow
Fall down in the snow
Till it’s after dark.
We’ll cook snow pies
In a big snow pan.
We’ll make snow eyes
In a round snow man.
We’ll sing snow songs
And chant snow chants
And roll in the snow
In our fat snow pants.
And when it’s time to go 首页 to eat
We’ll have snow toes
On our frosted feet.

WATCH ME ON THE WING

Sweeper: the deeper I can play
the faster I can lay
out my traps for their fullback
moving too close to mid field.
I shine along the sidelines
from mid field
back to our goal.

I am the quickest,
sharpest,
most intelligent,
(and
most modest,) player on
my
team:
in this league.

I have the
superspeed:
I have the need to do a little
more
than play only one position. I
defend. I score. I run lik
wind
across the 玉米 fields of
this
town.
I am a brown tornado on a
muddy
day.
The opposition knows
I come to play with
all I bring. They
watch:

watch me on the wing.

In Ms. Frizzle’s class, we had been learning about animals’ homes for almost a month. We were pretty tired of it.
So everyone was happy when Ms. Frizzle announced, “Today we start something new.”

"We are going to study about our earth!" 说 Ms. Frizzle. She put us to work 写作 reports about earth science.
“And for homework,” she said, “each person must find a rock and bring it to school."

But the 下一个 day, almost everyone had some excuse.

Only four people had done their homework. And Phil was the only one who had found a real rock.

“I guess we’ll have to go on a field trip and...

Hermit 螃蟹 was forever growing too big for the house on his back.

It was time to find a new house. He crawled up out of the water looking for something to hide in, where he would be 安全 from the pricklepine fish.
He stepped along the shore, 由 the sea, in the sand...

Is this a house for Hermit Crab?
Turning himself around, Hermit 螃蟹 backed his hind legs beneath the rock. The rock would not budge. It was too heavy.

When Ludlow was born, everyone immediately noticed this shape:

It wasn’t a cute little dimple.
It wasn’t an adorable nose.

And as the rest of him grew and developed and changed
IT DIDN’T.
It only opened for food, an occasional Burp! and plenty of grumbling.

Ludlow worked in a complaint department.

At the end of the day, he felt grumpier than ever.
Night after night he came home, grumbling and growling, and went to bed,
But one night something happened.

Ludlow had a dream.
Not just any dream—THE FUNNIEST DREAM IN THE WORLD!!!
(Ludlow: Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!)
He giggled. He guffawed....

This morning I asked Mom, “Why can’t I have a dog?”
“Not now,” she said. “Not again.”
And not to bother her when she’s busy.

So I asked Daddy, “Why can’t I have a dog? Last 年 你 说 I could have one when I was bigger. And I’m a lot bigger, see? So why not now?”

“Because of tight times,” 说 Daddy. He 说 I was too little to understand.
“I’m not too little,” I said.
Daddy 说 he’d give me a shoulder ride and tell me all about it at breakfast.

He 说 tight times are when everything keeps going up.
I had a balloon that did that once.

This is Arthur before he got glasses.

He couldn’t see the board.
Francine had to read Arthur the problems.
“Are 你 blind?” she always asked.
Francine got every problem right.
Arthur didn’t.

No one wanted to play with Arthur.

Arthur’s father and mother took him to the optometrist.
Dr. Iris tested Arthur’s eyes.

Arthur tried on all kinds of frames.

In a warm and sultry forest far, far away, there once lived a mother 水果 bat and her new baby.
Oh, how Mother Bat loved her soft tiny baby. “I’ll name 你 Stellaluna,” she crooned.
Each night, Mother Bat would carry Stellaluna clutched to her breast as she flew out to 搜索 for food.

One night, as Mother Bat followed the heavy scent of ripe fruit, an owl spied her. On silent wings the powerful bird swooped down upon the bats.
Dodging and shrieking, Mother Bat tried to escape, but the owl struck again and again, knocking Stellaluna into the air. Her baby wings were as limp and useless as...
