Anyone know what snake this is?

Found him/her in my back yard and my brother caught him. But I have no clue what type of snake he is. I live in southern California. Idk if that helps.

Yes, besides the end of its tail, which is reddish pink. And I've noticed that most Garter snakes have a white stripe down its back, while this one does not...

I just thought I might because I can only see the head, I see Gardener snakes all the time in Colorado...
