A/N: I know, I know, I'm 6 days late. Whack me with a hammer and beat me with a stick.

“Ok boys, 你 know the drill.” Skipper remarked. Nodding, Kowalski and Rico headed to the left tower whilst Manfredi and Johnson to the right one. Skipper stayed up in a 树 to keep watch. It was the first time he tried to lead a mission, and wanted everything to go perfectly. In fact, everything did seem fine, the security guards positioned in places where they wouldn’t obstruct the team, when he heard it. A low, droning noise, coming from behind him. Whipping around, he saw the plane heading right for the towers. Not having the time to think, he immediately contacted Kowalski. “KOWALSKI, GET OUT OF THAT TOWER!” He screamed into his walkie talkie. “Sir, I don’t see the need for that.” Kowalski countered, puzzled. “JUST DO!” Skipper shot back, closing off the conversation and calling Manfredi. The walkie talkie wasn’t working. Jumping off of the 树 he tried to forget about the gradually increasing roaring noise as he jumped up the stairs, heading to the 最佳, 返回页首 floor where the plans were kept. Suddenly, the whole tower lurched to the side as the plane hit it. Sliding into a wall, Skipper prayed Kowalski and Rico had gotten out in time. Stumbling blindly through the smoke, he worked his way along the floor. “MANFREDI! JOHNSON!” He tried calling out. “SKIPPER!” A voice called him from a room. Trying to open the door, he saw it wouldn’t budge. “MANFREDI ARE 你 ALL RIGHT?” Skipper yelled over the noise. “YES! SO IS JOHNSON! BUT A PIECE OF CEILING IS BLOCKING THE DOOR!” Manfredi screamed back. For a moment, Skipper wished Rico was here, he could just cough up a chainsaw and 分裂, 拆分 the door in two. “IS THERE NO OTHER WAY OUT? NOT EVEN A VENTILATION SHAFT?” Skipper asked, desperate. “SKIPPER, LEAVE NOW! THERE’S NOTHING WE CAN DO! GET THE PLANS!” Johnson shouted as he slipped two crumpled pieces of paper through the door. “I’M NOT LEAVING YOU! NEVER SWIM ALONE!” Skipper countered, grabbing the plans firmly in a flipper. Feeling the tower lurch again, he started crying silently. Not only were Manfredi and Johnson part of his team, they were his best 老友记 as well. The thing nearest to a family he’d ever had. “SKIPPER, GO!” Johnson ordered. “JOHNSON, I-” Skipper was interrupted 由 a sudden loud crash from beyond the door. “MANFREDI!” Johnson yelled. “WHAT? WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THERE???” Skipper asked frantically. “MANFREDI! I CAN’T FIND HIM! HE’S BURIED UNDER SOME RUBBLE!” Johnson informed Skipper. “SKIPPER, 你 NEED TO GO NOW! THAT’S AN ORDER FROM YOUR COMMANDING OFFICER!!!” Johnson yelled at him. “YOU’LL MAKE A GREAT COMMANDER, SKIPPER! NOW GO!” Tears in his eyes, the Lieutenant fled the tower, wincing as shards of glass cut him and exposed wires nearly electrocuted him. Tumbling out of the building, Kowalski and Rico immediately rushed to him. “Skipper! You’re alive! But where are Manfredi and Johnson?” Kowalski asked anxiously. The tears in Skipper’s eyes were all they needed as an answer. Never before had they seen their Lieutenant cry. “We’re going home, boys.” He simply whispered, getting up and heading off to Central Park, the plans still clutched tightly in his flipper. The plans which had cost Manfredi and Johnson their lives.
“And thus, I am deeply sorry for the double loss of your unit, but I now declare Skipper as your Commanding Officer, and Kowalski as his Lieutenant.” After the Elite Director closed off the video, Skipper immediately headed over to his bunk, sinking into it face-first. He wanted to curl up and pretend that it was all a dream. He wasn’t ready to lead a unit. Johnson himself had 说 that, as much encouragement and support as he had 给 his Lieutenant, he’d probably need at least another 年 to be fully prepared. “Alrighty, here yer go, little fella! Go an’ socialize with yer colony!” Skipper jerked up as he heard Alice right on 最佳, 返回页首 of his head. Peeking through the periscope, he saw her head off to her office again. The three penguins cautiously crawled out of the HQ, looking around. “What was the lady on about? Who was that animal she was talkin-” Skipper froze as he felt a tiny bundle of feathers tackle his foot. Plucking the puffball off, he raised it at eye-level. A tiny, round, baby 企鹅 was staring back at him, light blue eyes filled with a joy only 婴儿 can have. “Skipper, it appears that’s the animal Alice was talking about.” Kowalski muttered, poking it with a flipper. “Awww, gootchie goo!” Rico lifted the little 企鹅 up in his flippers, earning a tinkling laugh from the baby. “Isn’t it just adorable?” Kowalski asked, cradling the little 企鹅 in his flippers. Skipper stayed silent. Looking down in those blue eyes, he felt something hidden stir within him. Was that how Johnson, still a Lieutenant himself, had felt when he’d first laid eyes on the little baby which would then become his Lieutenant? He couldn’t place the feeling, it was just…Instinct. Paternal instinct.
“Skipper, I can mount some baby bars on one of our spare bunks to keep the baby in whilst sleeping…” Kowalski suggested, pointing at Manfredi’s bunk. “…Proceed, Kowalski.” Skipper waved him off to do his duty as he cradled the baby to sleep. He never knew he had this “soft” side to him, but he felt very attached to the baby already. “Kowalski! Wait! We still haven’t named it!” Skippr called Kowalski and Rico back. “Well, he is most surely a male, seeing his body shape and size.” Kowalski analyzed. “Then, we could call him…Private?” Skipper suggested. “Private?” Kowalski repeated, unconvinced. “Well, when we’ll start training him he’ll be of the rank private, and we don’t know anything about him so it’s almost as if his entire life were private…” Skipper explained further. “Then it’s decided. Private it shall be.” Kowalski nodded his agreement, Rico following suit. “Lights out, men.” Skipper ordered, depositing Private in his bunk and climbing into his own.
Skipper woke up to a hard thud. Peeking over the edge of his bed, he saw Private in a messy lump on the ground. “Private!” Skipper exclaimed, getting up and gathering Private off of the floor. Whimpering, Private snuggled deeper into Skipper’s chest. Sighing, Skipper got back into bed, Private huddled in between his wing and his chest. “Goodnight, Baby Private.” Skipper whispered to the slumbering penguin, stroking him softly with a flipper. Manfredi and Johnson were gone, he had to accept that, but he could see a fresh start for him and his team in the near future, alongside baby Private.
A/N: To honour the thousands of lives 迷失 that dreadful 日 11 years (And 6 days…Oops…) ago. Those terrorists were inhuman. Thank 你 all, people of the other aeroplane, because 你 made it crash before it could reach the towers, saving many other lives which could’ve possibly been lost. As much as Osama Bin Laden has finally been brought to justice, we will always remember the horrible loss of that day.
A/N: In this story, Johnson is Commanding Officer, Skipper is the Lieutenant and Kowalski, Rico and Manfredi…Well, whatever Rico’s rank in the series is (Corporal maybe? Boh. I’m shouting out 随意 ranks here…). Private is, well, a private…

The last part about Baby Private was inspired from 由 ladywhiplasher's story about Baby Private, who wants acceptance and 爱情 from Skipper.
