Let’s All Stay Young Forever Like Henry – Forever Season 1 Episode 3 – Fountain of Youth
Abe is checking out a hot septuagenarian babe, and Henry is amused. Henry excitedly tells Abe he may have found a way to die, and Abe wants to know if he wants to die so badly, and Henry tells him he wants to grow old and experience the fullness of life.
An older man gets mugged and runs after the mugger. He jumps the mugger and begins beating on him when he suddenly falls over and dies. At the lab, Henry notes the man has the body of a 30 year old but the brain of a 100 year old (the man was in his 70s).
Henry and Jo talk to the man’s son, and the son says he was acting strange since his mother died two years ago. Jo asks for permission to open the victim’s briefcase, and he grants it. Inside, they find a mysterious card. They also find $7,000.
In Chinatown where the man was robbed, Henry does his Sherlock Holmes-ing and they find the location where the man died. Although the outside is grungy and full of graffiti, inside is white and sterile. On a television is a doctor advertising eternal youth. Henry is clearly disturbed by his message. Jo and Henry find Doctor Fredrick Gardner, and they discuss his drug with him, called Aterna. The Doctor won’t hand over a sample without a warrant, and when a colleague calls him away, Henry notes he’s had extensive plastic surgery.
Jo asks the doctor for his business card, and Henry takes the time to befriend one of the patients. When he and Jo meet up, they’ve discovered that Jo has managed to get the doctor’s fingerprints, and Henry has managed to get a sample of Aterna.
We’re Scientists, We’re Better Than That
Henry flashes back to 1902 when he was a doctor and he watches a peddler sell potions. He’s offended, and his friend says that maybe one day modern medicine will keep him alive forever.
Henry does some tests on Aterna and finds cheap ingredients instead of the ones the doctor listed. Jo finds the doctor’s real identity is Raul Lopez and that he used to run a clinic in Florida that was shut down after two people died. Jo tells Henry to pack his swimsuit because Lopez is in the Hamptons.
At Lopez’ house a party is in full swing. The two find Lopez and let them know they’re on to him, and Henry wants to know who the real genius behind the drug is. Lopez agrees to go with them, but would like to put on more clothes. As Henry and Jo are waiting for him, the same colleague from the clinic stumbles into them. Henry tells her she’s had enough, but she says she doesn’t drink, and then stumbles away. Henry smells her drink and notes that it’s sparkling water.
Joe and Henry hear a thud from upstairs and rush to see what has happened. Lopez is on the ground with a stab wound in his chest. It looks like whoever stabbed him came in from his window and stabbed him from behind. Henry finds the tip of a scalpel still inside Lopez.
Henry and Lucas (who’s lost two dead bodies so far this episode) can’t find a trace of drugs, but Henry won’t accept that. He flashes back to 1902 when he discovers his friend from before trying out electro-shock. His friend has tuberculoses, and wants to try everything he can to live longer.
The memory triggers something in Henry, and he goes rushing to Jo to tell her it’s tuberculoses that killed Lopez. Jo wants to tell everyone taking the drug. Henry tells her the worst part is that the drug is made of human brains. But whose brains?
Missing Bodies And Brains? You Know What That Means!
Henry asks Lucas how many bodies are missing, and he says 12 between several districts. After some rabbit trails, Lucas realizes that Anton, an EMT, always gives him donuts, and Henry figures Anton gives Lucas the donuts to distract him. They find Anton just as he’s pulling out a brain.
When Jo questions Anton, he admits to creating Aterna himself. Henry bangs on the window and Jo steps out. He tells her to ask him a specific question, and Anton just says yes. Henry bangs on the window again, and when Jo steps out, he tells her it was a trick question and that Anton doesn’t have the brains (haha) to create Aterna. Henry and Jo are given the list of the patients, and Henry takes off.
At the shop, Abe is trying to sell a painting when Henry bursts in. He asks Abe if he took the drug, and Abe says he didn’t (he is a doctor’s son after all). Abe tells him he just went for a consultation, and that the chemist was brilliant. Henry has Abe go in to do a sketch. As Jo and Henry are trying to match the sketch to a person, Anton’s sister (who is the match) visits him. Anton tells her to sell all the drugs and take the money and run.
When Jo and Henry figure out who she is, Abe calls telling them he’s spotted her at the subway station. Abe follows her, and it takes a while for Jo and Henry to catch up. Henry finds the sister and tries to calm her down. She tells Henry she just wanted to do stem cell research, and Jo tells her to put her hands up. The sister tries to jump in front of a train, but Henry saves her just in time.
Henry tells Jo to enjoy life with someone, and she tells him she’s already found that someone, but he’s gone now.
Henry flashes back to 1902, and he’s trying to keep his friend alive. His friend is giving in and wants to go outside one last time. Henry admits that when you’re immortal you forget beauty.
In the present day, Abe is pumped up over the past day’s events. Henry wants to work in his lab, but Abe convinces him not to. Abe wants help with something, and we see Abe on a skateboard at the top of a large skateboard ramp.
Interestingly enough, there was no mention of Adam this week. I think it was a good call to not bring him into this episode, as he can easily be overplayed. What did you think of this week’s episode?
