Merida's personality was brave and heroic, but Mulan was the real hero. By the way, she's Chinese. Not Japanese (:

For me it's based on why they did those faults that created the situation. Merida wanted to change her mom, when she could just reason, and Mulan wanted honor, but also to save her father's life

I don't see how Merida is a 'hero'... just because she's good at archery, is brave and is kind of badass it does not automatically make her a hero. If she wasn't any of these things and had a similar personality to Aurora (no offence) but still did the same things in the movie and helped her mother then her actions wouldn't really be classified as heroic.

I like Merida and sure she helped to change her mother back into a human, but if that makes her a hero (which IMO it doesn't, she was doing what any normal person would do in the situation and it was her mistake in the first place) then surely Queen Elinor is even more of a hero for being the one to kill Mor'du and effectively save her family.

I suppose all the Princesses are heroes in their own unique way but Queen Elinor is the real understated hero of the movie IMO.

Psshhh. Both have good hearts but COME ON. Merida's heroic tale of turning her mom back to a human doesn't compare with Mulan saving her father's life, her family and all of China....duhh.

Of course Mulan, but I really don't know why they both are always compared xd Merida is hero in her own way, hero like other princesses, not so much like Mulan. Merida is brave, but her brave is not for heroism, but because she can accept that she was wrong and ready to fix her "error".

Mulan she could have been killed for what she was doing but when came too her loved ones she was willing to die for them

Merida may be brave but she didn't do anything heroic. I feel they could be friends though.

Both are real heroes, but I see Mulan as more of one.

To all the people saying Merida isn't a heroine, because she changed her mother for her own selfish desires, while that is true , that doesn't mean she didn't do heroic things. She was selfish, but it's called character flaws. She fought her father who was about to (unknowingly) kill her mother, and yes she made a selfish mistake, but she fixed it. So actually, Merida is a real hero oven if Mulan is more of one.

So how about Mulan? She went off to war, despite the consequences she might face, even if she was untrained, to save her father. Even when she admitted it was partly for her to get honor, that didn't stop her from finding Shang. While Merida saved her mother, Mulan saved China.

Merida let a dispute she had with her own mother boil over until it threatened the entire kingdom with destruction. Mulan laid down her own life for her father's, went off to war, and saved an entire kingdom in the process. It all comes down to the actual motives the characters have to make the choices they make. Sometimes the individual's purpose is more self-centered (Merida's), and sometimes it's more selfless (Mulan's).
