Since when is being a daydreamer, and following your 心 selfish? She did not know completely what she was getting herself into, and it was still hard for her to sign the contract, besides its not like this was a one sided thing- her father didnt make things easier 由 putting a hold on her, and he even admitted it himself. But there are couple times where she is concerned for her father and her sisters- she says " If I become human, I will never be with my father 或者 sisters again". So I am not going to sit and listen to anyone call her selfish anymore 或者 use the word selfish like its not a bad thing, because its common sense to anyone with half a brain that being selfish is a very bad thing. Everyone knows that. There is nothing good about being even a little selfish. So stop calling her that. NO ones needs; she didn't need the approval of anyone but herself if she want to chase her dreams- that would have been being too concerned with what others think, which is also not good. But family is different and she did consider them. Alot of 你 guys are very mixed up about the word selfish. I don't know where 你 got the info that it was an okay thing to be even a little selfish but you're wrong, The thesaurus says other words for selfish ( which I didn't have to use- cause its common sense) are: mean, mean spirited, ego-maniac, egocentric, cold-hearted, thinks only about the benefit of ones self, thinks of only how to gain things for ones self. These are not good ways to be. The Beast was put under a curse for being selfish- Gaston is selfish and Conceited. So think before 你 use it again because 你 are using it way out of context. And I will always correct you. If 你爱情 Ariel, don't do it cause it makes no sense. Not only her, but none of the 迪士尼 Princesses are selfish. Thats why this word is being misused.

AudreyFreak Following your heart is the definition of selfish. It is by definition following YOUR feelings, what YOU want. For example, your heart could "tell" you you deserve that hot guy more than his current girlfriend and it's OK to steal him. That's very selfish. so by definition it is, and just a romantic idea. Anyway, I don't think Ariel is as horribly selfish as some say but there is some selfishness there. I think another princess is more selfish but her fans will kill me if I say. Ariel did leave her family, but I'm not sure she did it on purpose. Someone here said she probably just didn't take them into consideration (not that that's good, but it's not the same as abandoning them). there's nothing wrong at all with caring what the people who matter to you think. and at that age, you definitely need your parents' approval for most things. it's just being immature and arrogant to think you know better than they do (although in one regard Ariel did know better about humans- well, she did end up being right about them, but she didn't have any real proof they weren't all evil, but whatever). It's also not right to compare her to Gaston. she's a heroine; he's the villain. So of course they won't be the same. Plus, Ariel's movie doesn't paint anything she does as really wrong, and BATB does everything to make Gaston look like pure evil. Not trying to be nitpicky here, I was just trying to counter a few of your points is all. ;) I don't hate Ariel, but she is fun to discuss.

MaidofOrleans Nice article, but I agree with AudreyFreak. I wouldn't say she's incredibly selfish, but she is a tiny bit. Also I'm not saying selfishness is a GOOD thing, because as you pointed out it definitely isn't, but I like the fact that Ariel is a bit selfish. It makes her a more realistic and layered character.

Why the hell people are using this word to call her that is beyond me, they obviously dont know the true meaning. Because the Villains are selfish, Ariel is not selfish. She very very important to me, and I am not going to let people call her that when she isn't. But thank you again, its nice to not be alone, I was starting to feel like I was talking to an empty room. Maybe they are thinking of Vanessa ( wink wink) Damn you Vanessa! - ( they are under the same curse as Prince Eric.)

TheFabulousFAN ariel is selfish, but if you aren't selfish you wont gain anything , every one is a little bit selfish, don't judge me by my statement either, Ariel is my 3rd fav i love her but she is still selfish, Rapunzel and Jasmine are a little too, you have to be a bit selfish or else you have no self worth i agree with AudreyFreak she isn't horribly selfish she normal selfish like normal people

LupinPrincess Ariel is selfish, u aren't listening to reason, selfish may be associated with being "mean" but it's not the definition...selfish equals following ur OWN interests...that's IT, that's the only and true definition...so by that description ariel, and many of the other girls r technically selfish! No, she in no way is the cruel, heartless, self-serving, inhumanely selfish character her haters paint her as, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have a selfish bone in her body. About her family (seeing as I'm pretty sure I'm where you got that from)- no, that's not at all what I was referring to when I said she didn't think of her family in that quote. "If I become human, I'LL never see my father or sisters again-" nowhere does that take into account her father's or sisters' feelings. All she mentions there is how she will be effected, not that her father may go mad in agony over her leaving, not that her sisters will be left feeling a part of them is missing. Also, the whole "selfishness is negative so don't say Ariel is selfish" just doesn't make sense. Are we to say all the princesses are perfect and have no faults? Because that is FAR from the truth. Yeah, Gaston was MORE selfish than Ariel, but Ariel can still be selfish at times. The word isn't being misused because people say she is, but because people talk about her like that is her defining character trait.

pretty_angel92 first of all, everyone's entitled to their own opinion....people are commenting on why they think Ariel IS selfish and you just respond to them in the most stupid way "NO SHE'S NOT"...seriously, if you don't respect people's point of views, then, you shouldn't be making these articles. just saying second, i do think she's incredibely selfish...her actions in the movie are selfish. she only wants to do what BENEFITS her, without caring for her own family or friends....at the end she doesn't even regret what she did, she gets her happy ending and she doesn't change at all, she thinks that what she did was totally right and she had all the right to do it....she doesn't even apologize to her father and she only says "i love you" at the end, because he transformed her into a human again...that's being selfish. she's only thinking about herself and her happiness

MadameLee Well for those people who are aruging that she's selfish well techinally the whole cast except for Eric is selfish. (Even though I agree with the OP) Ariel wants to be part of the human world, King Triton doesn't want his daughter to go up to the 'fish-eating barbarians', Sebastian is selfish because 1)Ariel ruined his concert 2) he's only did "Under the Sea" to convince her that it's better in the sea then up on land. 3)he's only does "Kiss the girl" because he wants the whole business to get done with.
