In the article, Color Blindness: Psychological Effects, Jessika Bailey describes what color blindness is and how it affects the psychology of a person who is afflicted 由 this disability. Color blindness is when one, two, 或者 all retinal photoreceptors, 或者 cones, in someone’s eyes are damaged 或者 not working in some way. Bailey explains that this is usually caused 由 a mutated X chromosome. Men that have one of this mutated chromosome get color blindness, and women must have two of this chromosome to get the disability as well. There are three types of cones in someone’s eyes: red, green, and blue. Bailey states that there are three different types of color blindness: anomalous trichromacy, dichromacy, and monochromacy. Anomalous trichromacy is when either of the cones are weak 或者 are altered. This results in just an impaired vision from what normal viewed people see in most colors. Dichromacy occurs when one of the cones are missing. The effects of this results in a reduced dimension of color. Monochromacy is a type of color blindness that happens when a person has no cones in their eyes. This means that a person cannot see color at all. Bailey says that each type of color blindness has a different effect on someone, ranging from slightly annoying to a daily struggle, that goes for the person’s psychology as well. If the disability is too much of an obstacle and gets in the way of a person’s career, daily tasks, 或者 life in general, that person can seek counseling to help cope with the disability. School is a very tough place for a child 或者 teen with color blindness. Anything having to do with color can be a challenge. Bailey uses a science experiment like a chemical reaction with color changes as an example. The student cannot do the experiment correctly if they cannot tell what is happening. Besides schoolwork, other students may tease a color blind person because of their disability. Cooking is another daily task that color blind people might suffer through. Color is very important while cooking foods like meat and knowing when fruits and vegetables are ripe 或者 rotten. If someone is cooking meat and they can’t see 颜色 very well, their pink, raw meat can easily become black and burnt before they even know it. If they’re dealing with fruits 或者 vegetables a color blind person may not be able to tell if a 香蕉 is ripe because they can’t tell whether is green 或者 yellow. Driving may be a danger as well because of traffic signs and traffic lights. Bailey says that the specific positions of each light is so color blind people don’t get confused, but that isn’t always the case. Other countries and major cities may have vertical hanging lights instead of the common horizontally hung lights 或者 there could be 更多 than just 3 或者 4 lights on one traffic light. Employment can be one of the toughest challenges a color blind person can face. There are some occupations that require people to take color blind tests, and if a person with color blindness takes the test and fails, there is no chance that the person will be employed for that job. Any job that has to do with aviation are examples of occupations that do not employ color blind people. In conclusion color blindness is a disability that has a range of different types and effects. They can either be annoying or, to a severe extent, crippling. Educating oneself on the disability can help someone get a firmer grasp on it, whether oneself is effected 由 it 或者 not.
