"KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES" (1953) Review

Twentieth-Century 狐狸 was never a studio that I would associate with 电影院 about the British Empire. Mind you, the studio had released several during the period between its formation in 1935 and the 1953 release of "KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES". Yet . . . it never seemed to produce many productions on European imperialism in compare to studios like Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.

Just recently, I watched "KING OF THE KHYBER RIFLES" and discovered that it was a remake of John Ford's 1929 adventure film, "THE BLACK WATCH". And...

"POLDARK" SERIES ONE (2015): EPISODES FIVE TO EIGHT

Within the past year, I had developed a major interest in 作者 Winston Graham's 1945-2002 "POLDARK" literary saga and the two 电视 adaptations of it. Series One of the 秒 adaptation produced 由 Debbie Horsfield, premiered on the BBC (in Great Britain) and PBS (in the United States) last year. Consisting of eight episodes, Series One of "POLDARK" was an adaptation of 1945's "Ross Poldark - A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787" and "Demelza - A Novel of Cornwall, 1788-1790".
Whereas Episodes One to Four adapted the 1945 novel, Episodes...

"THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1948) Review

There are times when I find myself amazed at the longevity of Alexandre Dumas' 1844 novel, "The Three Musketeers". The novel has been in circulation for nearly 170 years. Hollywood and other film industries have been adapting the novel for the 电影院 或者 电视 for nearly a century. One adaptation I recently viewed was the Hollywood movie produced and released 由 MGM Studios in 1948.

We all know the story. A young Frenchman from Gascon sets out for Paris in the early 17th century to 加入 the King's Musketeers. During this journey, he meets a beautiful,...

"LOUISIANA" (1984) Review

Thirty-four years ago, HBO had aired a three-part miniseries about the life and travails of a nineteenth century Southern belle named Virginia Tregan. The miniseries was called "LOUISIANA" and it starred Margot Kidder and Ian Charleson.

Directed 由 the late Philippe de Broca, "LOUISIANA" was based upon the "Fausse-Riviere" Trilogy, written 由 Maurice Denuzière, one of the screenwriters. It told the story of Virginia's ruthless devotion to her first husband's Louisiana cotton plantation called Bagatelle . . . and her 爱情 for the plantation's overseer, an Englishman...

"THE MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER" (1953) Review

Tyrone Power's career took a strange turn during the post-World War II years. Although he still managed to maintain his position as one of Twentieth Century Fox's 最佳, 返回页首 stars during the remainder of the 1940s, something happened as the 1950s dawned. Powers still found himself in Grade A 电影院 during that particular decade. But he also seemed to appear in a growing number of standard costume melodramas.

Twentieth Century 狐狸 lent Powers to Universal Pictures to 星, 星级 in the 1953 drama called "THE MISSISSIPPI GAMBLER". Directed 由 Rudolph Maté, "THE MISSISSIPPI...

"PERSUASION" (1971) Review

This adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1818 novel turned out to be the first of the old Jane Austen 电视 adaptations that the BBC aired during the 1970s and 80s. Produced and directed 由 Howard Baker, and adapted 由 Julian Mitchell; this two-part miniseries starred Ann Firbanks and Bryan Marshall.

As many 粉丝 of Austen’s novel would know, "PERSUASION" told the story of Anne Elliot, the middle daughter of a vain and spendthrift baronet, who finds herself reunited with her former finance, a Naval officer of lesser birth named Frederick Wentworth. Eight years before...

"THE JOURNEY OF AUGUST KING" (1995) Review

When the 1995 adaptation of John Ehle's 1971 novel, "The Journey of August King" hit the theaters, it barely made a flicker in the consciousness of moviegoers. In a way, I could see why.

"THE JOURNEY OF AUGUST KING" begins with widowed farmer August King traveling through the hills of western North Carolina in the spring of 1815, after selling his produce, making a final payment on his land, and purchasing goods at the local markets. During his journey, he learns about a hunt for an escaped slave. August eventually comes across the slave - a 17 year-old...

"THE PRISONER OF ZENDA" (1937) Review

I realize that many film critics and 粉丝 would agree with my suspicion that the 1930s saw a great deal of action films released to theaters. In fact, I believe there were as high number of actions films released back then as they are now. Among the type of action films that flourished during that era were swashbucklers.

One of the most famous Hollywood swashbucklers released during the 1930s was "THE PRISONER OF ZENDA", producer David O. Selznick's 1937 adaptation of Anthony Hope's 1894 novel. This tale of middle European political intrigue and identity...

Below is my review of the 2004 BBC miniseries, "NORTH AND SOUTH", which is an adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell's 1855 novel:

"NORTH AND SOUTH" (2004) Review

If someone had told me years 以前 that I would find myself watching the 2004 BBC 电视 adaptation of Elizabeth Gaskell’s 1855 novel, let alone purchase a DVD copy of the miniseries, I would have dismissed that person’s notion as inconceivable. I have never shown any 前一个 interest in ”NORTH AND SOUTH”. And I am still baffled at how I suddenly became interested in it.

Mind you, I have been aware of the 2004 miniseries for the...

"BLANCHE FURY" (1948) Review

I suspect that many 粉丝 of costume dramas would be fascinated to know about the series of period dramas released 由 the British film industry during the post-World War II era. A good number of those films were released 由 a British film studio known as Gainsborough Pictures. But not all of them were released through this particular studio. Some were released through other studios 或者 production companies . . . like the 1948 period drama, "BLANCHE FURY".

Based upon the 1939 novel written 由 Marjorie Bowen (under the pseudonym of Joseph Stearling), "BLANCHE FURY" told...

"POLDARK" SERIES ONE (2015): EPISODES ONE TO FOUR

In the years between 2010 and 2015, I have not been able to stumble across a new British period drama that really impressed me. Five years. That is a hell of a long time for a nation with a sterling reputation for period dramas in both 电影院 and television. Fortunately, the five-year dry spell finally came to an end (at least for me) with the arrival of "POLDARK", the BBC's new adaptation of Winston Graham's literary series.

I am certain that some people would point out that during this five-year period, the ITV network aired Julian Fellowes'...

"GEORGE WASHINGTON" (1984) Review

Twenty-four years before the award-winning HBO miniseries "JOHN ADAMS" aired, the CBS network aired a miniseries about the first U.S. President, George Washington. Simply titled "GEORGE WASHINGTON", this three-part miniseries was based upon two biographies written 由 James Thomas Flexner - 1965's "George Washington, the Forge of Experience, 1732–1775" and 1968's "George Washington in the American Revolution, 1775–1783".

"GEORGE WASHINGTON" spanned at least forty years in the life of the first president - from 1743, when his father Augustine Washington died...

"ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) Review

Years ago, I used to watch a great deal of old 电影院 on late night television. My two 最喜爱的 channels that offered these 电影院 were Turner Network 电视 (TNT) and the American 电影院 Classic (AMC), which used to air 电影院 without any commercial breaks. On TNT, I had stumbled across a Western movie originally released 由 MGM Studios in 1953 called "ESCAPE FROM FORT BRAVO" (1953) and fell in 爱情 with it. After watching my recently purchased DVD copy of the movie, I could see why it became a 最喜爱的 of mine.

Directed 由 John Sturges during the...

Hi guys, this film is actually based on a real life story about Crown Prince Rudolf of Austria-Hungary. Are 你 ready for film review moment?

The Historical Story

Okay, I knew this movie from my trip to Vienna, Austria and it has been coming to 10 years already. I saw this name through my tour booklet and although I did not visit it, it fascinates me about the history of the Hapsburg that rule the Dual Monarchy of Austria-Hungary.
Back to the story, it's about Crown Prince Rudolf, the only son of Emperor Francis Joseph (or Kaiser Franz Joseph in German). Unfortunately, the latter's conservative...

"FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD" (2015) Review

I have never seen "FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD", the 2015 adaptation of Thomas Hardy's 1874 novel, in the theaters. And yet . . . my knowledge of this film led me to view two 前一个 adaptations. And finally, I found the chance to view this adaptation, directed 由 Thomas Vinterberg.

"FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD" told the story of a young 19th century rural English woman named Bathsheba Everdeene and the three men in her life - a 羊 farmer-turned-shepherd named Gabriel Oak; her neighbor and owner of the neighborhood's largest farm, William Boldwood;...

"LOST IN AUSTEN" (2008) Review

I must admit that I am usually not a 粉丝 of novels 或者 any other forms of storytelling that are based upon 或者 continuations of published works of the origin author. This is certainly the case for the numerous works (sans two) based upon Jane Austen's six published novels.

The 2008 miniseries, "LOST IN AUSTEN" is not based upon any particular Austen novel that was not written 由 the Georgian Era writer. Instead, it is the brainchild of screenwriter Guy Andrews. The latter created this fantasy-comedy, which is an adaptation of Austen's novel, "Pride and Prejudice"...

"THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO" (1934) Review

I have seen only two versions of Alexandre Dumas père's 1845 novel, "The Count of Monte Cristo" in my past - the 1975 电视 version with Richard Chamberlain and the 2002 迪士尼 film with James Cavielzel. While 阅读 a good number of 文章 about the movie versions of the novel, I came across numerous praises for the 1934 adaptation that starred Robert Donat. And since I happened to like Dumas' story so much, I decided to see how much I would like this older version.

Set between the last months of the Napoleonic Wars and the 1830s, "THE COUNT...

"CALIFORNIA" (1947) Review

I am a history nut. And one of my 最喜爱的 historical periods that I 爱情 to study is the Antebellum Era of the United States. One of my 最喜爱的 topics from this period is the California 金牌 Rush. I also 爱情 movies. But despite this love, I have been constantly disappointed 由 Hollywood's inability to create a first-rate movie about 金牌 Rush.

I may have to take back my 评论 about Hollywood's inability to produce a first-rate movie 或者 电视 production about the 金牌 Rush. There were at least three that managed to impress me. Unfortunately, the latest film...

"POLDARK" SERIES ONE (1975): EPISODES FIVE TO EIGHT

Last winter, I began watching the BBC's 1975-77 adaptation of Winston Graham's literary series about the life of a British Army officer and American Revolutionary War veteran, following his return to his 首页 in Cornwall. The first four episodes proved to be adaptation of the first novel in Graham's series, 1945's "Ross Poldark: A Novel of Cornwall, 1783-1787". Episodes Five to Eight focused on the series' 秒 novel, 1946's "Demelza: A Novel of Cornwall, 1788-1790".
