Tammy's parents were delighted to see Anjanette taking an interest in their shelter. "We can always use 更多 volunteers," her father said. "There's always plenty to do around here!"
Anjanette grinned. Helping to take care of Tammy's parents' rescue 动物 felt exciting. She couldn't wait to tell Tammy and Ferdinand, and also find out what they were thinking of doing. The 下一个 time they were all hanging out together, standing outside and enjoying the late summer sunshine, she told them. She couldn't help her words coming out in an eager rush.
Tammy giggled. "That's so great, Anjanette! My parents will be thrilled. I'm sure you'll do a better job at helping them than I did!"
Tammy was nowhere near as tall as Ferdinand 或者 Anjanette; in fact, 下一个 to them, she was actually quite short. Her voice was also not deep like theirs, but fairly high-pitched. She was beginning to develop a figure, though, and also to put on a little extra weight.
"Maybe your parents will let 你 try again?" Anjanette wondered. "You were a child when 你 last tried to help them."
Tammy shrugged. "I know, but I'm still clumsy. Besides, I'm not sure taking care of the 动物 is my thing so much anyway."
"What do 你 want to do?" Anjanette was curious after her talk with Uncle Bruce.
Tammy gazed out at the trees and the 草 behind her friends. "I 爱情 being outdoors. And running, and playing... I don't think I could do anything that would mean being indoors too much."
"I keep coming back to music," Ferdinand joined in. "I've always loved listening to it, and I've asked myself many times if I'm sure I don't want to get something 更多 'sensible'... but I think I need to do something that involves music. And spreading world peace."
"Like a Beatle," grinned Tammy.
Anjanette smiled too, but a funny feeling was twisting in the pit of her stomach. Neither of her 老友记 seemed to notice, 或者 be upset by, the fact that they all wanted to pursue three very different things. Not that that really mattered. It shouldn't matter. It was just that....
"Look, Ferdinand!" Tammy's loud whisper made Anjanette turn. A pair of girls who went to their school were passing 由 on the sidewalk, and when they saw Ferdinand, one nudged the other and they both started giggling uncontrollably into their hands. The 秒 girl took a few breaths to get control of herself, then favoured Ferdinand with a bit of a grin and waved.
Ferdinand gave a pleasant smile and waved back. "That's been happening all summer," he told his friends, once the girls had gone. "Actually it's happened since I was twelve, but never this much."
"You're growing into a man," Tammy teased him. "I bet when we get back, every girl in school will be all over you!"
Ferdinand laughed good-naturedly. "You might be right!"
Tammy and Ferdinand may have been laughing, but Anjanette was silent. She didn't even know why she shouldn't be happy her friend was getting all this attention. Well, really she did. Back at her old school, the only ones who ever paired off and went on anything like a 日期 had been the mean ones, because everyone else - like her - got bullied and pushed to the sidelines and nobody wanted to be seen with them. If Ferdinand started getting all this attention from girls, he might become different, out of her league even. And then she might lose him.
