Here’s What Fans Think About One Direction Permanently Breaking Up

A new report says the band\'s hiatus will become a permanent split.

One Direction, the global superstars whose five-year run of No. 1 albums, smash singles and public visibility made them one of the biggest bands on the planet, have reportedly split up for good,

reports. MTV News is waiting for confirmation from the band.

A source close to the band apparently told the magazine that the band’s four members — Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson — chose “not to renew their recording contract” after their On The Road Again tour wrapped in October. “The 1D thing just ran its course,” the source reportedly said. “They’ll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers.”

In August 2015, the group members announced they would be taking a hiatus beginning in March, and most of the press cycle for the band’s fifth album,

, saw the four discuss their plans for the break. This latest report suggests that the hiatus will, in fact, become permanent.

“Liam is really interested in songwriting and production,” the source reportedly told the magazine, adding that Harry is “launching a career in acting and singing” — something his four ASCAP-registered song titles suggested in late December. Louis is expecting a baby, and Niall said he’s “looking forward to chilling for a while now.”

Fan reactions on Twitter ran the gamut from skepticism and disbelief to outright sadness.

The media is doing this to get attention, they want us to believe that One Direction is going to break up. Don't believe a word they say.
