随意 Dialectics: Dragonheart 3
A perfect recipe to fuck up a great legacy
Hello and welcome to the newest 文章 of 随意 Dialectics! It's been a while, but today, we are gonna take a look at the first “honorable” mention of a movie from 2015. Why did I use the “cat fingers” on the world “honorable”? Read on and you'll find out. All right, first of all, I gotta say, I have always been a huge 粉丝 of dragons. They are mystical, wise and they kick ass. When 你 make a movie that is centered on dragons, it's really hard to screw everything up in my opinion. There are several good examples of such films in cinema history, like:
- How To Train Your Dragon 1, 2
- Eragon
- 2020: Reign Of Fire
- The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
And this goes on, including one of the best dragon 电影院 ever made: Dragonheart. It was one of the most defining and memorable 电影院 of my childhood and after an acceptable but forgettable sequel, I had high hopes for the third installment of the franchise. Oh boy, I was let down so very badly! Dragonheart 3: The Sorcerer's Curse was a huge disappointment! So here's a perfect recipe to fuck up an otherwise great legacy, established 由 the original movie:
- take a bunch of uninteresting characters
- a boring storyline
- people with no 表演 skills
- fill it out with extremely cliché moves, which have been used like a thousand times
...and 你 have 90 分钟 of crap with a 下一个 to nothing entertainment value.
While the original movie movie had a great cast, spectacular visuals, that are still enjoyable up to this day, an interesting storyline that managed to drag the viewer in emotionally; needless to say, this film had nothing of these traits in it. On the contrary!
Okay, so let's take a looksie, shall we?
According to the story, a comet falls from the sky, in ancient Britain. A cast out knight-wannabe takes his chances of going across the 墙 of Hadrian, in hopes of finding 金牌 in the meteor. But he finds a dragon instead. A male dragon, who's guarding some golden eggs. But an evil sorcerer sets his sight on 说 eggs as well and puts a curse on the dragon, almost killing the primary protagonist in the process. But of course, the dragon shares his 心 with the guy, cos he was so “noble” to protect the eggs.
Damn, the world has changed a lot in 20 years and this movie shows the problem in the heads nowadays. Why? What is our protagonist like? He's self-centered, greedy, materialistic, deceitful, cowardly and manipulative. He saved those eggs not because he's noble, but because he wanted to sell them to his master in exchange for knighthood. You'd expect him to confess after a while, but he keeps up the act throughout the whole movie. He basically uses everyone he encounters for his own petty ends.
But of course, he goes through a quick transformation and a change of 心 and fights for honor at the end, however, I fail to see and live through that catharsis on an emotional level. Why? Prior to this, he even deceives the dragon who saved his life and considers him as a friend!!! What kind of sick, selfish fuck would do that?! “Oh yeah, I lied to 你 cos I wanted to be a knight, but now I'm all good and pure!”
Fucking hell! This mentality pissed me off big time! And what about the other characters? We have a tough Celtic archer girl and a druid apprentice who's there for comic relief and a generic, megalomaniac antagonist... like we haven't seen one of those for 2 000 times...
Instead of intense, high budget battle scenes that were seen in the first movie, we get B-category, cheap swordfights that wouldn't pass even for a Steven Seagal movie! The plot is predictable, I could see every 移动 coming from three miles away. The characters are boring and one dimensional, without a true personality, and the storyline puts way too much emphasis on the shared 心 of the human and the dragon, which really serves no purpose. I mean, we see a cutaway scene, 展示 the half dragon, half human heart, X-ray style in like every 10 minutes!!! The guy was not worthy of the dragon's gift at all in the first place! But the cheesiest, most cliché thing was when after killing his corrupt master, he resurrects his dead archer girlfriend, using a dragon egg. Oh and he has to become the leader and the creator of peace afterwards... yeah right... such a 黄鼠狼, 狡猾的人 is soooo worthy and qualified to that! It's like everyone ignores his selfish, greedy ways; including the supposedly wise dragon, who has a deep connection with him through their shared hearts... for fuck's sake, he could feel the guy's emotions and did not realize what a true asshole he was?! Dayuuum!!!
So let's see if this film can offer any positives! Yeah, the visuals for the dragon were good and Ben Kingsley's voice suited him pretty nicely, with him being British and all. The “shadow-leap” stuff was pretty cool too, even though it has been utilized only once, despite the lengthy exposition of the technique. I am trying my best to widen this list, but I really can't think of anything else that would make this movie look a tiny bit better, except for a very few, mildly amusing comic scenes, like when the guy punches himself in the groin to cause the dragon some pain (???), but the dragon's genitalia is covered 由 thick, armored scales, so he doesn't feel a thing. Haha, and 你 think your 爱情 life is bad? :D
All right, let's sum up then! Dragonheart 3 basically obliterates the legacy of its predecessor; it offers nothing from the original, iconic movie.. Our protagonist is the worst human being ever, yet his self-centered, materialistic and greedy ways prove to be quite rewarding in the end, which bothers me the most. Because this message says: be an asshole, don't care about others, only 你 matter, 你 can run everyone else over to get what 你 want, use everybody, be greedy cos material wealth and fake titles are the most important things in the world. This deeper meaning Dragonheart 3 conveys is very alarming and shows the problem with this world. This way of thinking has to come to an end soon, because it's going against everything. And I was expecting a female dragon from the very beginning this time!!!
All in all, I cannot recommend this movie for 你 to watch because of its clichés, boring plot, one dimensional characters and harmful deeper message. I'd give it two dragon heads out of six.
I hope 你 enjoyed this review, feel free to leave a 评论 below! See 你 下一个 time!
