How things change as Liv encounters a very different group of zombies.
iZombie returns for its third season in April and series co-creator Rob Thomas said to expect some changes, as Liv (Rose McIver) begins to discover more about the mysterious Vivian Stoll, introduced at the end of Season 2, and her militarized zombie group at Fillmore Graves.
Speaking to press at the TCA (Television Critics Association) press tour this weekend, Thomas remarked, “I feel like Season 3 has a much different feel than Seasons 1 and 2. Both in Seasons 1 and 2, you know, there were big bads who were pretty clearly doing awful things.” Thomas noted that both those seasons ended in big showdowns, with Season 2 going into “a full on traditional zombie movie at the end where you\'re trying to escape from zombies coming after you."

In Season 3, Thomas explained, “You do not have such a clearly defined antagonist at the center of the show. And, in fact, I think the big mystery of Season 3, for the audience, is trying to figure out whose side are we on? The zombies at this military outfit, Fillmore Graves, they just want to survive. And some of them are willing to go further than Liv might think necessary, but who is in the right in this situation? That\'s a big part of the question. No one needs to be nefarious in a blatant way. So there\'s much more figuring out who\'s got the best plan for zombies moving forward.”
As always, there will also be plenty of fun provided by the different personalities Liv takes on thanks to the brains she eats, with McIver mentioning a dominatrix episode, along with an Dungeons and Dragons installment that “was easily one that I didn\'t expect to have as much fun with and I loved.” Aly Michalka (“Peyton”) said she felt that was the whole cast’s favorite Season 3 episode, with McIver adding, “That was our favorite episode out of everything we\'ve done. I loved it.”
We’ll also get a bigger idea of what Major (Robert Buckley) is like under the influence of brains in an early Season 3 episode that finds him taking on the personality of a teenage girl. Said Buckley, with a grin, “They had told me in the off season, ‘We have a great episode for you. It\'s perfect for you!’ So, as an actor, that\'s ‘What is it? Is it going to be, like, a cage fighter? A lothario?’ They are, like, ‘No, no. It\'s, for you, a 14 year old, bitchy, teenage girl.’

Season 3 will see an expanded role for Michalka, now that she’s finally a series regular. Said Thomas, “One of the things we loved doing on Veronica Mars and we are loving doing on iZombie is just the world building as you get to go on and on. When we find actors up in Vancouver who we love, we tend to write for them over and over again. We loved the actor who plays Don E. so much in the show that we went straight to the ‘He\'s got a twin brother’ because that actor was so good that having him die after one episode was not getting our money\'s worth for him. So it\'s how characters who weren\'t necessarily going to be long term in the show, like Dale Bozzio, for example [end up appearing more]. When we get great people up there in Vancouver, you\'ll see a lot more of them. We do respond to people who are good in the show. We go back to them.”
Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) now knows Liv’s secret, and Goodwin said, “It\'s been a lot of fun just playing with different reactions. The first two seasons is kind of like, ‘What the hell is going on?’ But now that Clive is in on it, sometimes he plays along with it. Sometimes he could be put off with it, and sometimes he uses it. He converses with the brains a different way. So I\'m just glad to meet so many more options to interact with Liv and also playing off the rest of the characters still. “
iZombie Stars Break Down New Love Triangle - Comic Con 2016
iZombie is a CW series, but completed seasons are available on Netflix and the cast and crew were asked about the show’s fandom and how they’re interacting with the series.
Said Kohli, “It\'s been a kind of a strange mix, and I think it\'s been hard for all of us to kind of gauge exactly who and what and when people are watching our show and how they\'re doing it. One of our kind of windows into the fandom is Twitter. But all the people that turn up for the conventions to see these guys aren\'t on Twitter. So we don\'t have a fair representation of who\'s watching it live and who is live tweeting with us. Netflix was a big deal because we are in binge culture. I\'m guilty of it. I rarely watch live TV.”
Co-creator Diane Ruggiero-Wright couldn’t resist evoking one of the CW’s slogans, replying that those who wait to watch on Netflix, “Don’t dare to defy.”
