If, like us, you found that fan theory about a Friends alternate ending almost too sad to take, you might want to give this one a miss - because it\'s even more depressing and even more convincing.
It all centres around Ross\'s relationship with his son Ben and why Ben, played by Cole Sprouse, basically disappears for the last two and a half seasons of the show.
Not only does he not appear in the last 54 episodes, Reddit user smokingcage has also pointed out that he\'s only mentioned SIX TIMES - and never even meets his new half-sister, Emma, on screen. Bit weird, really.
Smokingcage also has a pretty sad theory as to why this is - namely that Ross lost custody of Ben to ex-wife Carol, after his behaviour became more and more erratic.
Did Ross\'s insanity hit a breaking point with his ex-wife? Could she no longer handle his nice guy syndrome and homophobic snickering? Did she decide to take full custody of her son? Did Ross even fight her for Ben, or just let him go, shifting his focus to the new baby he had with the woman of his obsession? He couldn\'t even handle his daughter having a male caregiver.
The reddit user also makes some fairly convincing points to back up the claim…
1. "He tries to convince a self-defence instructor to help him scare the female characters"
3. "He\'s manipulative and disrespectful in his relationships, especially Rachel"
5. His "homophobic snickering" sees him try to stop Ben playing with a Barbie
6. There is also the small matter of his slightly erratic behaviour
8. When he basically broke in to Mona\'s apartment and hid there
9. And he doesn\'t exactly have the best reaction to Rachel\'s pregnancy news
"People like to give Ross the benefit of the doubt, wondering if perhaps he was a better father off-screen. Perhaps his children met but the audience never saw. The more likely answer is that he was such a deadbeat father that he completely faded away from his son\'s life, pretending to his family and so-called friends that he still saw a boy he barely knew."
Ummm. When you consider the fact that Ross\'s dad Jack actually calls Emma his "first grandchild" after she\'s born... it doesn\'t exactly sound like the most unreasonable story ever.
