It was touching, but not especially sad to me.

Same as before. This scene is short so I don't really felt it was sad.

Swanpride picked Ariel crying after King Triton destroyed her collection:
So, it is time to weed out the scenes which were sad and touching so that the actual tear jerkers are left. This one is sad, but it doesn't have the impact Cinderella's dress getting destroyed had. Ariel loves her collection, but at the end of the day it is just stuff. But ripping up the dress, that is like ripping up Cinderella's dreams. There are a few other moments which fall more on the "touching" side, but they are about people dying or a missing child, so I picked the Ariel moment first.

Sad and eerie, but it didn't quite find the "heartbreak" button in me.

I agree with Swanpride. Also Ariel could have replaced the items easily and hide them in another place. Maybe not Eric´s statue but since she knew where he lived, she could have gone to see him. Besides, for how long she had that statue? Hours? And Eric was still alive. Cinderella´s dress was from her mother and she had died.

I cried at the Shang scene. And again, the others are far more tragic. I feel for her, but at the end of the day she's still alive and has her family to go back to.

Sad but not tragic. I knew she could get out of this tough situation, so it didn't feel so hopeless.

Ariel's grotto being destroyed is a tear-jerker to me. It wasn't just stuff for her, it meant the world to her, a world she so desperately wanted to belong. And it was destroyed in one mean action by Triton. Her grotto was her safe haven.
Mulan one, while sad to see, didn't really shake me.

^agree, everyone saying "it's just stuff", it's literally all she had to connect her to where she wanted to be

^Ik I voted for it but it really does feel unfair that people are saying it's just stuff. Like as if they wouldn't be upset if a parent threw a tantrum and destroyed their prized possessions.

Sure I would be...but not as upset I would be about someone dying, about feeling like a failure or about the symbolic destruction of all my hopes.

wavesurf picked The King and Queen's scene before releasing the lanterns:
^^^^Why is this Ariel's scene is less a tear-jerker than Mulan's is? Ariel's is the symbolic destruction of her hopes. That's what "her human detritus collection" was. It was Ariel's attempt to "be herself."

Mulan's is also a symbolic destruction. She'd given everything she had to be "a man" in the eyes of Shang and her army mates. Like in Ariel's case, it all came crashing down in one horrible moment.

This scene in Tangled with Punzie's parents has never made me cry. Ever. I don't see why no one else hasn't picked it, YET!!!!!!! This scene literally lasts thirty seconds, unlike Ariel's scene and Mulan's scene, which lasts 3-5 minutes, each.

Ariel's scene and Mulan's scene BOTH are reminiscent of Cinderella's dress from her mother being ripped up. These three scenes are the same level of emotionally broken.

because the one with Rapunzel's parents features two people who have been missing their daugher for 18 years and they don't even know if she's even alive or if they'll even see her again

Yeah, I'm not seeing why Ariel's is any less sad than Mulan's. I also compare Ariel to that of trans* people. So it makes it even harder for me to see that stuff being destroyed.

@wavesurf-- Idk, every year the King and Queen are reminded of their lost daughter with the lanterns.

@BB2010 and PL: At least they have hope Punzie is still alive. But that scene never impacts me much. It's a ritual for them, by that point.
