I think the writers know once Elena goes Damon she won't be able to get back with Stefan.
That's why they don't have the slightest idea ( yet ) how to play this out and are dragging it as long as they can.

I don't want Delena 吻乐队（Kiss） to happen during one of the many Stelena breaks ups and I don't want Stefan to take Elena back after she has been with Damon!!
