I have a theory:)
When u look @ the picture of Elijah from 2x15 u can see his 衬衫 is stained with blood (I guess). Isn't this the episode where Damon is hosting a 晚餐 and Elijah shows up?
My guess is he tries 2 kill Elijah but fails because John lied 2 him about the dagger and the ash. Maybe john still wants 2 kill Stefan and Damon 4 being involved with Elena:) He figured if Damon tries to kill Elijah Elijah will kill him and then he'll just have to worry about Stefan
