Jordan Scott wrote a book called "Nocture" a few years ago, when she was fifteen. The simmalarities with it and "Breaking Dawn" seem to be more than a coincedence.
But, is it really *that* surprising? I mean, Stephanie Meyer series is pretty much all plagerised.
I think Anne Rice should sue her, too. So should a great number of other authors.
Has anyone read the book that True Blood is based on? I know nothing about the books or TV series, but I read the blurb for the book and it sounded ricidulously like Twilight but switched round a bit. A girl who can read minds falls in love with a vampire who's mind she can't read or something... Hmm...
I have read the first book, that True Blood is based on - Dead Until Dark, and yes, it had a mind reading chick and a vampire, whose mind she can't read, and considering, that this was published before Twilight, it's quite obvious, that SMeyer got some 'inspiration' from these books.
But... since when has ideas in itself been copyright law protected? I mean, sure it sucks and is pathetic to steal ideas instead of coming up with your own especially if you literally steal them and do not mention who originally had them... but... Of course if also the way the ideas have practically been portrayed is the same or too similiar, then I can see the crime but...
Of course I haven't read Breaking Dawn nor that othe rbook so I don't know what really is the case.
But that True Blood reference - heck you're right. That is too much the same only the other way around, o be just a coinsidence.
I've always thought True Blood and Twilight are strangely similar, and the Breaking Dawn and the other book are very similar, I'm not too sure I see the similarities between The Vampire Chronicles and Twilight series though.
I hope SM loses, she has way too much money from Twilight, and she's eebul!!! But she probably won't =(.
As much as I dislike Meyer and the Twilight series, I have to say that this lawsuit sounds pretty weak. You can't copyright ideas- so unless there's an actual passage from Nocturne that is repeated in Breaking Dawn, then Scott doesn't have a case.
And the truth is, there's no such thing as a completely original story. Every story is a Frankenstein of ideas gleaned from an author's own experiences and inspirations and universal themes that are oftentimes subconscious.
I heard that on star 101.3 (a radio station)
Ryan Seacrest said "Author of Twilight, Stephanie Meyer,"
Me: *gag*
Ryan: Is being sued-
Me: WHAT?
Ryan: For plagerism of Breaking Dawn having similarities to a book called "The Nocturne"
Me: YES!!
Plagiarism is word-for-word copying, or at least synonym-for-synonym copying. Ideas are not copywrited because, as T.S. Eliot said, "Mediocre writers borrow. Great writers steal."
Though I wouldn't call Meyer a "great writer", one of the many tools in a writer's toolbox is to look at what worked for great writers before them and emulate them a few times until that new writer has a new voice based on the voices she's read. These plots in Twilight aren't new. The structure is as ancient as Aristotle. The same can be said for Harry Potter and Star Wars (though believe me, it pains me to compare them to Twilight). The reason for this is because these plots and structures work.
Plagiarism is intentually stealing someone else's work. You can't steal an idea.
I disagree with you. Scott wasn't a great writer, she was a little known writer and SM saw the book and copied it. Unless Stephanie can prove she's never read "The Nocturne" or can prove that Breaking Dawn and The Nocturne are different, she might lose the case.
Yes you can steal an idea. Just hear an idea and take it and use it yourself before the one who actually got the idea, has the chance to do it. But this isn't such a case and even if it was, it wouldn't be a crime - as I said and someone else said too and we all shoul dknow anyway; ideas can't be copyrighted.
And as far as I've understood the way an idea is practically porteayed is more copyrighted but I'm not sure if it's actual a lawsuit level that of... I believe there should be literal copying of the written text to make it a case of that significance...
Ideas can be stolen, ideas are stolen, borrewed and shared all the time, what makes it a lawsuit is if the idea is patented or copywrited.
And its true that stories are always inspired by other stories, characters and people. My english teacher told us that no story is 100% original. Its a different thing though if a book is inspired by a story or has stolen the story. I just hope Scott has some kinda copywrite thingy that means she wins against SM.
@Kaidi
Yes. I think she read Mrs. Harris's 'Dead Until Dark' and established her story from there. They are disgustingly similar, almost like an PG version with some tweeks and a less compelling outcome and characters.
I'm not surprised. The only thing that seemed original to Twilight was the sparkling. Vampires with powers, vegetarian vampires, girl falls for vampire, its all been done before.
Anyway, unless SMeyer has copied entire paragraphs, she'll win. And even if she has copied entire paragraphs, she's probably winning. She's got millions to spend in lawyers.
agree with you people
yeah she copied classic books and turned to mush
romeo and juliet
pride and prejudice
wuthering heights
and a whole lot of other stuff
The funny thing is people see the similarities between Twilight and Rome & Juliet, yet SM said that Romeo & juliet were stupid because they fell in love before they knew each other. Oh yer coz Bella and Edward knew each other fully after 1 week.
^Exactly. Also, I really don't see the similarities between Twilight and Romeo and Juliet. Twilight isn't a tragedy and has nothing to do with family fueds, which is pretty much the basis of Romeo and Juliet. I mean yeah they both have the 'forbidden love' thingy but so do tons of love stories.
I just meany and Girl and Guy fall in love on first sight. They come from different families i.e. vampire and human. I think thats about it.
I don't see the forbidden love thing. How is Bella and Edward's love "forbidden"? Plus, its not like anyone ever cares if they love each other or not, exept the Cullens, butthats probably causethen they'd have to suffer Eddy's moning.
...eh, not surprised.

She needs to get her facts straight.
