Back in the good old days of the 90s, there was so much point and click games. 你 had classics like the King’s Quest franchise, Sam and Max, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, and much more. But, if 你 were like me, a strange and bizarre little boy with a 爱情 for giant insects on the playground and Tim 伯顿 电影院 (Yeah, I was a weird kid) Then when 你 got your hands on some Point and Click adventure games, 你 most likely played ones such as Sanitarium, Dark Seed, Maniac Mansion, Harvester, and my personal 最喜爱的 out of the entire point and click horror genre, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream.



Let me start this off 由 saying I have not read the short story that this game is based on and written 由 Harlan Ellison. What I do know is that this man is a genius for creating such a story, and the game, while having some differences, is still the same story as in the book. In this game, America, Russia, and China created supercomputers that could wage wars that were too much for humans to understand. The American supercomputer, 由 the name of Allied Mastercomputer, gains sentience, and in this state, absorbs the other two supercomputers. The computer renames itself as AM, with an immense hatred for humans. With this much power, he uses it to destroy the entire population of earth, killing everyone except five unlucky individuals. These characters include Gorrister, a man with a hole in his 心 who is upset with himself after sending his wife to the asylum when she was becoming 更多 mentally ill. Then there’s Benny, once a handsome marine soldier, now turned into a mindless and hideous ape-creature. Ellen, the only woman left alive with a fear of the color yellow after a traumatic incident. There’s Ted, a con artist who lies to others for money. And finally, there’s Nimdok, an ex-nazi scientist who was unaware of what dangers his experiments truly created. AM has kept these five alive for one hundred and nine years in order to torture them for fun, and now want’s to play a game where they are sent into a world of their own traumatic experiences, and this is where the game starts… Well damn.



In this game, 你 play as all five characters, as they all have to deal with their own nightmarish reality in the game. Already, this game has caught my attention. Every character is different in their own ways. None of them are black 或者 white. They're all flawed in their own ways. Also, I can’t talk about this game without spoiling it, so I’m just gonna say this game has massive spoilers ahead. So, you’ve been warned. So, every single character is flawed no matter what. Benny used his power as a soldier to kill others who disobeyed him, and AM not only takes away his looks, but how he is seen as a human. Which, he isn’t human at all. He’s a monster, pretty much. And that is what AM see’s him as. Gorrister blames himself for seeing his wife be put into an asylum and wants nothing 更多 to die. AM traps him in a padded cell that he can’t escape from. Even when he tries to kill himself, he can’t escape from AM, making him suffer the same fate as his wife had. Ellen, being raped 由 a man in yellow, is what causes her to be afraid of the color. The fact that she is in a world with only men is enough for AM to torture her, but he also traps her in a yellow Egyptian like pyramid, with yellow surrounding her completely. Ted has to deal with the lies that he has 给 to people, even suffering from the lies of others, not knowing who he can trust and who is lying 或者 not, making him experience the same thing he has done to others. And finally, Nimdok… well, he was a Nazi scientist. He’s far from a saint. However, looking at the horrifying experiments that were done on those in the camp, Nimdok see’s what has truly been a problem for him, and now suffers from the same torture on others. It is also proven that Nimdoks tests are the very tests that created AM in the first place. Also, infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele is a character…. As if this game couldn’t get any 更多 disturbing. This game shows no good 或者 bad character. Except for one… and he’s one of the best. And 你 know just who he is.



What can I say about AM? Really, what can I say. He’s one of the most terrifying and disturbing villains in a horror game ever. And he doesn’t even have a physical form outside of being a computer. He’s just a machine, yet he manages to be the most horrifying thing to be put into a game. His thoughts on humanity as a whole and the speech he gives about his hatred for humans is just so disturbing. He manages to use his intelligence to completely destroy all of humanity and get into the minds of these five individuals, not only being able to torture them physically, but mentally and emotionally as well. Usually, a villain only tortures a person physically, and sometimes, it’s just mentally. But AM manages to do both at once. That shows the power of AM. He’s not just capable of destroying everything in an instance, but he also has the power to tap into your mind and see your very worst fears come to light. Knowing that he is capable of these kinds of things is… very disturbing. And I 爱情 it so much. Not to mention, the voice of AM is amazing. First off, they got the writer of I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream to voice AM. Secondly, he manages to be very disturbing with his dialogue, but also campy as hell at times. I 爱情 it.



This is the kind of horror that I love. Games that don’t try to shock 你 with gore, 或者 surprise 你 with jump scares. No, instead, I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream uses real life issues that would make a person uncomfortable 或者 disturbed if 你 spoke about it in real life. The things that happen to those who are insane, the long term problems that come with rape, and the consequences one faces for things like murder and genocide. Yeah, these are things 你 don’t want to say to just. They’ll no don’t get a bit uncomfortable. That is what I 爱情 about I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. It’s a horror game that isn’t scary. Horror doesn’t have to be scary. It just needs to make 你 feel uneasy. It doesn’t want 你 to try and enjoy this game comfortably for even a second. This game is disturbing the whole way through. And in these other worlds, there is 更多 than just those few things. There’s issues with religion, human sacrifices, murder- Oh yeah, and one scene that was taken out which involved Benny eating a baby alive…. Yep.



I think the thing I 爱情 most about this game (Besides the characters, the way it uses horror and how AM is the best thing in this game), is that, as depressing, creepy, and just plain fucked up it is, it still wants 你 to believe that there is hope in this game. This game has 你 play as these five characters in hopes that they can prove that humans are in fact better than machines and supercomputers, 展示 that they are able to change. Benny, once a hateful man who killed people, willingly sacrificed himself in order to save a young boy from being killed. Gorrister, through his time inside his fictional reality, was able to forgive himself and put the past behind him. Ellen was able to get passed her fear of her traumatic experience and become stronger. Ted was able to try and save the life of another person, after being nothing but a liar his whole life and try to better himself. And Nimdok saw the errors of what he had done and wishes to stop this all 由 destroying AM. And then, there’s the ending of the game. The ultimate shocker of this fantastically morbid story.



In the final act of the game, as AM flees within himself, one of the five characters can go inside, where they find three of AM’s components, Id, Ego, and Superego. When talking with them, it is revealed that a colony of over seven hundred and fifty humans are sleeping on the moon, and have been there as long as AM had become sentient. If the character inside AM is able to destroy the three components, it will shut AM down, but also destroy all things holding AM’s constructs, including the pod that is holding the human survivors. So, 由 destroying the components within AM, one of the characters can stay in their digital form and keep the machine under control so that the humans can return to earth, stopping AM and freeing the five characters from their torture. However, this is a horror game, and they all can have some bad endings. Like AM being defeated, but using the last of his power to turn the only character left into a 果冻 creature. 或者 AM could fuse with the other computers and torture the remaining human survivors as well. Or, if 你 really want to go all the way on bad endings, 你 can have AM use Nimdok’s research to kill the last of the human survivors, and to where all the characters are forever trapped with AM. But you’d have to be pretty sadistic to want that ending. Also, the 果冻 creature that is unable to kill themselves is amazing for a final creepy moment, 展示 them as being unable to die 或者 having no mouth, and a must to scream…. Yep.



I don’t think there are enough good things to say about I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream. It’s a game that manages to use science fiction and horror all at once. And it does it so well, that I can’t believe that one man could create a story, which eventually lead to a just as incredible game. The characters are all great, the story is amazing from beginning to end, and it has some of the best horror I’ve seen in a game, especially for the time it was released. If 你 are a huge horror fan, please, play this game. I mean it, it’s easily one of the best horror games. If I had to put it on my 最喜爱的 horror games of all time, it would easily take 秒 place. The game can be played on Steam for ONLY SIX DOLLARS!? Wow, I say it’s worth the price. Buy this game, play it, and have a very uncomfortable and disturbing time. Take care.
