CHAPTER FOUR- Who are they?
It was a day, just like any other day. I was walking down to the shopping centre, along the 海滩 on the sand, not for any particular reason, but just to feel the morning sun on my skin. But of course, being me, I started 白日梦 about the upcoming Saturday, our hunting day, when I bumped into someone. I knew that I could continue walking and pretend like nothing happened, but I acted disorientated just so I could get a good look at the person I knocked into. I started at his feet, slowly moving my head up, until I saw another set of eyes starring back at me. It was a boy, about 16 (not gonna say ‘about my age’ because he would be dead and buried if he was MY age).
"I’m really sorry. Are 你 okay? Sorry, I wasn’t paying attention.. I", he continued.
"Oh, no sorry, it was my fault, I wasn’t watching where I was going", I stammered.
"I’m Edward", he 说 as he offered his hand out to me. His face was so familiar. But I just nodded and replied
"Hi, I’m Stephanie", but I didn’t take his hand. I may act human but my hands are as cold as ice. He looked a bit embarrassed though, so I thought, oh well who cares if I feel cold to a stranger, he doesn’t know me anyway, and I grabbed his hand. But he wasn’t the only one shocked.
"Your hands...", he started.
"...are freezing", I finished. I pulled my hand away, and gave him a confused look.
"Hey, I’m as confused as 你 are", he said. Fine, play dumb, I thought, but I knew he was a vampire. Any humans fingers would be falling off if they were that cold.
"Sorry, but I thought we were the only ones here... we can leave", I offered.
"What are 你 talking about?", he asked.
"Um, never mind. So where are 你 headed?", I asked.
"I, uh, have to go back to school", he 说 in an obvious voice, as he waved his books. Hmm... school. I hadn’t been there for decades, I had almost forgot how fun it is to repeat the same subjects over and over. I must have been too quiet because he asked me "Where do 你 go to school... I mean, I have never seen 你 at Forks High School, are 你 from La Push?", he asked. What to do, I thought. A vampire, pretending he isn’t a vampire, who spends his days around human teenagers. I had never known any other 吸血鬼 who had that much self-control. So what to do?
"Oh, I don’t go there.. well, not yet! I’m enrolled to start tomorrow", I stated.
"Well, if 你 need someone to 显示 你 around, give me a yell", he offered.
"Will do...".
"See 你 tomorrow, Steph".
"Yeah, bye Edward", I muttered, but he was already walking off. I gave a quick glance around me. The only person I could see was an elderly lady crossing the road, so guess what? I ran! I ran all the way home. As soon as I walked into the lounge room, Emmett was already walking towards me.
"Emmet... there’s..", I stuttered. I mean, Edward seemed nice, obviously a vegetarian, but a vampire who attends high school isn’t likely to live on his own. He would need at least one vampire to act out as a guardian and when there’s 更多 than 4 吸血鬼 in the same town, there’s gonna be some trouble. But with at least six of us in one town, the Volturi would certainly be alerted.
"How many is there?" he asked. I got myself together and looked at Emmett. He was completely calm. But of course, he had never faced the Volturi, not like I had.
