how do I tell a girl i like her?

we have been 老友记 since we were kids, and i have liked her ever since then. her birthday was a few days ago, and i was going to tell her, but i didn't know how. when i told her i loved her the 日 after, she thought i meant as friends. so how do i tell her? help please!
