I don't see the point of props, anyway. I don't think I'd care if they weren't free. Besides, what do 你 even mean 由 free? They aren't "free" now, because someone else still has to actually give them to you.

支持 will never have to cost money. It could result in violence, and in extreme cases, even lawsuits. Not a good idea to bring money into something like this. Plus, richer people, 或者 people willing to spend 更多 money might feel that they shouldn't be giving 支持 to people who won't give back, i.e. people with little 或者 no props, thus creating social classes on Fanpop, which is one of the things many people 加入 潮流粉丝俱乐部 to temporarily escape from. I know that if 你 支持 started costing money, I would protest against it, and if that didn't work, I would quit.

Stop using them? What else are 你 supposed to do...
