When my mother used to read me the Pippi-stories, she always told me how Pippi was originally 'born': Astrid Lindgren's daughter was ill and she asked her mother to make up a story about "Pippi Langstrump". And so, based upon the sort of silly name, Astrid Lindgren made up a very special caracter.
And I used to listen to my mother and imagine I was the one for whom the story was invented, and that Pippi was my own personal friend. I just loved the way she always found something fun to do and the crazy part was that even though she had superstrength and a case full of gold, she never really used that. Instead she would go cleaning the house and to me that sounded like the most fun in the world!
Even as I got older and my mother didn't read me stories anymore I would still sometimes find comfort in rereading the books. It was like my own secret portal back to my early childhood.
During my childhood we didn't have tv in the house. "Only filth on tv." my father used to say. When I was around ten we finally got one and one of the first things I saw was the televised movie of Pippi. I saw Inger Nilsson (the actress portraying Pippi, the one in this spot's icon) and I knew she wás Pippi. I was old enough to tell the sort of awkwardness of the other child actors and the low-budget look of the set and the 支持 and the special effects (and the horrible dubbing) but none of that mattered because this little, quirky girl was jumping around, doing everything Pippi used to do in my imagination. This is how Pippi as a caracter ánd Inger Nilsson-Pippi (because frankly, who could ever tell the difference?) became the true symbols of my childhood and why she will always be very special to me.
Pippi is just the coolest caracter ever created and she should be read to every little child in the world, so they learn how to have fun (even when there's not much to go with).
