I hope 你 enjoy and PLEASE REVIEW for each!
Key chains, no matter how much Skipper denied it, were important alright. Marlene liked to think that they described a lot about a person. All those seemingly useless little charms served a purpose other then just taking up 太空 on a keyring. Marlene's collected all sorts in the zoo dropped 由 visitors 或者 from the Zoovenir Shop. She had one with a flashy little light on the end she loved to point and have Mort chase around and had a few made from hemp rope with seashells sown in, the only one's she's ever seen because of her life in captivity. Her first ever key chain was a black, fat amusing little beeping thingy with a broad button on the flat surface. Whenever Marlene pressed the button, a car alarm would sound loudly in the employee parking lot and Alice would stop whatever she was doing at the time to stalk off, grumbling under her breath. She supposed Alice didn't like key chains either. Maybe she wouldn't always be in such a surly mood if she had a few.
Marlene believed that everyone had their own personal key chain. Kinda like a soul mate. Some were hard to pin on someone, and sometimes the 搜索 for the right one might be long... but there's special one for everyone out there. The One
. At least... that's what Marlene used
to think. The small pile of discarded key chains at her side that Skipper turned down kept growing and she half suspected he was only dismissing them because he was too stubborn to even give them a try.
to be one that 你 like out of these!” Marlene miffed as she eyed a rabbits foot before making a face and decided not to even go there. People sure were a strange bunch. She wondered vaguely if they ever walked around with a severed foot of their own
kind on keyrings.
“Marlene, keys are a serious matter. They lock away our most valuable possessions and shouldn't be weighed down with frilly little reminders,” Skipper 说 smoothly at her side, the slight edge of impatience in his voice. “Keys are tools, not accessories.”
“How 'bout... a Swiss army knife?” Marlene ignored him completely and dangled one encouragingly at him. “Huh?
It's a tool, manly, always handy and -”
“That's what I got Rico for,” Skipper 说 smugly with the barest of smiles. “No Swiss army 刀 can follow an order with smooth precision like he does.”
Marlene bit the inside of her cheek; he had a point there. “Okay
... oh! How about a mini-watch with a built in calculator, huh? It'll help 你 keep time with your busy schedule and – ”
“Kowalski,” Skipper nodded sharply, sending a wink her way. “'Nuff said.”
“Smiley face?” Marlene suggested weakly.
“You are impossible!
” Marlene huffed, turning away and busying herself with another display. “Y'know what? That's fine. Keep a bare and boring keyring. Since I'm
driving, I'm still picking one out to use and I can take it off when I'm done.”
“Alright, I can humor 你 this time,” came Skipper's reply and she inwardly fumed. “But I
get to choose the right one. Can't just have 你 pick it out and taint my boring keyring with nail clippers and sparkly glitter gloss.”
There's never a pleasant compromise with that guy, is there? Skipper could be so... so frustrating at times. He's a great guy, yeah– but he irks her to no end with how stubborn he can be. He's insensitively blunt, narrow minded, demeaning- the 列表 goes on and on! They have little in common and argue about the simplest of things. He never listens to her, even when she's right.... She wonders how she puts up with him at times.
“Nope,” Marlene crossed her arms, she's not going to back down on this one. “You've had your chance. It's only fair I can pick out something I like now.”
“I think I can pick out something we both
like,” Skipper challenged. “If I can't get it right the first time, you're welcome to pick out as many lanyards and ribbons 你 want and I'll wear it proudly on my keyring for a week.”
Marlene arched a brow at him and scoffed at the idea. Looks like Skipper's going to lose since there's just no way he had any idea what she liked. And even if he guessed correctly – there's no way he'd like the same. They were complete opposites and contradicted each other in every way. Then again... Skipper didn't make such wagers unless he was sure of himself, did he? Marlene chewed this over and while she couldn't stand to be proven wrong, she couldn't stomp down her curiosity at what he might pick.
“Okay,” Marlene 说 finally. “Let's see what 你 got.”
“Close your eyes. Can't let 你 in on the secret ways we men shop.”
With a roll of her eyes, Marlene did as he asked. It's just like him to go over the 最佳, 返回页首 with everything. Nothing was ever simple with him. Her ears pricked at the soft jingle of chains to her right as he stepped around the displays, turning them every which way and she couldn't help the smile that tugged at her face as she imagined what he might look like right now, flippers full of 'useless accessories'.
“You see,” Skipper began after a few moments and she could plainly hear the sly smile on his voice. “I don't need a Swiss army knife. Don't need a flashlight 或者 the zoo's souvenirs to remind me where I'm at.” Marlene startled slightly as she felt his flipper close over her paw before gently opening it. “What I need, is what I don't
have.” Her fingers closed around something soft and furry and she couldn't help the confusion that furrowed her brows. Was he giving her pom-poms 或者 something?
“Open your eyes."
Marlene blinked open her eyes and caught his for a fraction of a 秒 before looking at the surprise that awaited her. It was a small silver chain with two miniature plushies of a 企鹅 and an 獭, 水獭 dangling together cheerfully in her paw. She smiled softly and remembered why she puts up with him. No matter what a pain he can be, there's always these small moments where he isn't so Skipper-ish but... but just Skipper
with her. Just these little occurrences where he's not barking orders 或者 going on about monster trucks. No team 或者 his quirky paranoia to distract him. Just his flipper still clasped in her paw with that smile he knew she liked, eyes focused completely on hers for a change.
“So, what do 你 win since you're right?” Marlene asked quietly as she cuddled the plushies together in her paw.
Skipper gave a small shrug .“I'll put it on my keyring every time 你 take me for a dive around the zoo. Funday's are good for you?”
Marlene smirked. “Does that mean I proved that girls make good drivers?”
“Negative,” Skipper 说 sharply, back to being Skipper-ish again as he slipped his flipper smoothly around her waist and led her to the exit. “Don't push your luck, Marlene. You're the only exception.”
Marlene smiled and clutched the key chain tighter in her paw. Maybe in this instance... she could accept that small compromise for now. There were plenty of Fundays to prove him wrong after all. The End A/N:
Thanks again to all who've waited forever for this!
