What is 3a?

I've seen that a lot, but only for Once Upon a Time.
I assume the 3 is for season 3, but I'm confused to why there's an "a".

Season 3 was divided into two lots of 11 episode arcs. The first half (3a) was the 'Neverland' arc and the 秒 half (3b) was the 'Oz' arc.

Apparently, they're doing the same for season 4.
