The Walt Disney Co. Tuesday reported a record breaking quarter for its theme parks in the United States.
But its international parks – with the exception of Disneyland Paris – were hit by decreased revenues and higher pre-opening expenses at the Shanghai Disney Resort, which will now open in spring 2016 rather than December of this year.
Disney said operating profits at its parks and resorts grew 20 percent year-over-year to $805 million in the fiscal first quarter.
Revenues in the theme park unit rose 9 percent to $3.9 billion, and attendance at Walt Disney World and the
Disneyland Resort domestic parks was up 7 percent -- each setting an all-time quarterly attendance record. Disney does not release its attendance figures.
Companywide, Disney said its revenue in the quarter grew 9 percent year-on-year to $13.4 billion. Net income was up 19 percent to just under $2.2 billion.
In a conference call with investors, Disney Chief Financial Officer Jay Rasulo credited the domestic parks’ strong performance to high attendance and increased guest spending for merchandise, food and beverages. The Disney Cruise Line, which is part of its parks and resorts category, also reported a higher number of passengers this quarter.
Rasulo added that occupancy at domestic hotels was up 8 percentage points to 89 percent, and per room spending was up 4 percent.
Domestic resort reservations are up 3 percent compared to prior year levels, and booked rates are up 4 percent, he said.
The measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in mid-December had no bearing on Disney’s first fiscal quarter, which ended on Dec. 27, because health officials did not inform the public of the outbreak until the beginning of January. Disney’s CEO Bob Iger told CNBC on Tuesday that the measles outbreak is having no discernible impact on attendance at its theme parks.
Disney said income from international resorts fell due to the impact of the weaker Japanese yen on Tokyo Disney Resort royalties; higher costs of operating Hong Kong Disneyland; and pre-opening expenses for Shanghai Disney. On the other hand, Disneyland Paris reported increased attendance and guest spending due to higher average ticket prices.
Iger said construction of Shanghai Disney will be completed by the year’s end with a grand opening date set for spring 2016. Iger explained that after breaking ground in 2011, Disney decided to add $800 million to expand the scale of the Shanghai park, including more attractions.
Iger said that opening the Shanghai park in spring 2016 rather than the preceding December “is more opportune for us given the size of what we are doing, what we are building and the complexity of it and the fact that the weather is better and [it’s] after the Chinese Lunar New Year.”
Iger also said Avatar Land at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom is still slated to open sometime in 2017. And he hinted at the much rumored possibility of a Star Wars Land coming soon.
“We have a fair amount of design, development work going right now to greatly increase, which is no surprise, our Star Wars presence at multiple locations around the world,” he said. He added that more details will be announced in the coming months.
