After Klaus killed Gia and trapped Hayley in the body of a wolf, Elijah turned his back on his brother. And even though they’re sort of working together now, their relationship is far from repaired. According to Daniel Gillies, he doesn’t think it will ever be as the show is built on their dysfunction. 

With that in mind, Joseph Morgan has the perfect idea for how the show should end: Elijah and Klaus kill each other in a sword fight.
