It was called ‘Grey’s Anatomy': Is Sandra Oh’s Cristina returning in Season 11? | TVLine
Here's some stuff I remembered seeing:
Got a scoop request? An anonymous tip you’re dying to share? Send any/all of the above to
questions, but after Thursday’s episode I’m a little confused: I could’ve sworn Patrick Dempsey signed a two-year contract with ABC last year. What gives? —Laura
Ausiello: Four things: (1) Yes, it’s true, he signed a contract last year that was supposed to carry him through a potential Season 12. (2) Contracts are made to be broken. (3) Contracts tend to give networks/studios the “option” to change their minds at the end of each year. (4) The
and available in fine bookstores in winter 2018 — will answer your question in greater detail.
Grey’s Anatomy: Patrick Dempsey Leaves ‘Grateful and Humbled\'; EP Shonda Rhimes Talks Unimaginable Loss, Teases ‘New Chapter’ for Show
Question: Will there be any familiar faces attending Derek’s funeral on this week’s
Ausiello: I see what you did there, and it’s too soon. I’m assuming you’re specifically asking if Cristina will be back to help Mer navigate the initial stages of grief, and I’ll answer your question with a question of my own: If
manage to coax Sandra Oh back for an episode, don’t you think ABC would’ve teased the hell out of it in the promos for this week’s episode? (I’m anxious to see what excuse Cristina gives for not attending. She’d have to be dead herself not to hop the next plane to Seattle, right?)
the show going to look like now that Oliver is staying in Nanda Parbat? —Amir
Ausiello: For one, don’t worry about a rehash of the midseason arc that robbed Starling City of its hero. “The tricky thing about [the next episode] is making it different from… when Oliver was missing and presumed dead,” says showrunner Marc Guggenheim. “One of the things we talked about is, How is Team Arrow functioning post-Oliver? We didn’t want to get into ‘crime on the rise,’ because I felt like we did that with Brick, but you’ll see with [the next two episodes] what Team Arrow is up to and how they’re working to continue to protect the city.” And no, that doesn’t mean the Atom will simply step in to fill the void. As Guggenheim notes, “Every time Ray interacts with or allies himself with Team Arrow, there’s a story reason behind it, as opposed to just the assumption that, ‘OK, he’s part of the team now.’ [This week] is a very Team Arrow-centric episode, and Ray, for all of his charms and for all of the help he can provide, is not a member of Team Arrow.”
Ausiello: Your question is pretty definitively answered in the May 10 finale.
will share a scene together in the finale. Can you confirm or deny that it’s a flashback? No CGI involved I hope? —Ingmar
Ausiello: I can confirm it’s not a flashback. I can’t confirm how the episode was shot (i.e. body doubles, CGI, etc).

Ausiello: Fair warning, Iva, that Thursday’s Season 2 capper finds Christy coming to the realization that “the road to a happy life leads away from your mother.” And after dropping that bomb, Anna Faris and Allison Janney don’t share the screen again ’til the end of the installment. Lest that all sound too dire, though, a Marjorie sex scene (audio only), a maniacally hurled alarm clock and Christy’s repeated references to former timeslot rival The Voice deliver plenty of gut laughs to cut through the Plunkett family drama.
Question: Nestor Carbonell dropped a little bombshell when he mentioned shooting an “emotional and physical” scene with Vera Farmiga for next week’s
. In the light of latest events between Norma and Romero, it sounds more ominous than promising. Anything to prepare us for what might be coming? —Maria
Ausiello: I’ll see his “emotional and physical” and raise him “heartbreaking and violent and kinda-sorta-hot.” I’ll also add that there is no way one of those actors didn’t walk away with some light bruising after shooting said scene.
Ausiello: Yes you may, and then some. Here’s a report from Matt Mitovich, who has already seen Monday’s freshman finale: “It’s true, I audibly groaned at the close of last episode, seeing that a(nother) mob war would fuel the finale. But know what? It kinda works — though make no mistake, there are some sloppy twists. (Like the characters who make a bold escape only to be recaptured 15 seconds later.) Elsewhere, something involving Cat kinda broke my heart; we bid adieu to a character I was very sad to see go; and while the big Bruce reveal is teased in promos, it’s still pretty cool (yet absolutely should not have been spoiled). Also: The Riddler promises to be a quite different sort of villain.”

— anything about the finale will be devoured and appreciated. –Erin
be in the finale: Any mention of Jack Randall’s brother, a minor point in Diana Gabaldon’s first book but a major one in the second (and therefore likely important in the second season of the Starz drama). “I don’t think that made it into the edit,” series creator Ron Moore tells TVLine, and Tobias Menzies — whose character would have uttered the mysterious line (familiar to fans of the book) during a harrowing scene in the finale — says he can’t recall the mention, either.
Question: Any scoop on who’ll give Deacon a liver on
? (I mean, there’s no way they’ll kill him off… right?) –Laura
Ausiello: I’m inclined to agree with you, Laura. But we took the question straight to the man himself, star Charles Esten. He wouldn’t let us in on exactly what’s going to happen to his ailing alter ego — but he said he’d seen fan theories online that came really close. “Oh yeah. You always get the range, throughout the whole three seasons. They come close, but I always love that the writers are able to add that little detail you didn’t foresee,” he says. “It’s good, because we’re not just playing out what you expect. We’re playing out
of what you expect and keeping it interesting. That’s what the writers do so well, and what I’m so glad for.”
not coming back next year. Take my mind off it by giving me some finale scoop, please. —Barb
Ausiello: Remember when star Ioan Gruffudd told TVLine Henry wasn’t going to worry about Adam much in the future? The finale makes the
behind that statement abundantly clear — and not in the way you’re thinking.
Ausiello: That depends. Are you a fan of this really-not-OK pairing, Nicole? Because if so, you’ll love a scene in this week’s episode. And if not, you may want to skip the end of said scene.
Question: Color me curious and slightly perverted, but do we know what base Sheldon and Amy went to during their little sleepover on
Ausiello: You’re disgusting Tammy. Here’s your answer directly from showrunner Steve Molaro: “They remain safely on first base.” BONUS SCOOP: The musical moment at the end of Thursday’s episode (the one I teased in last week’s AA) involves three of the show’s male characters crooning a classic tune from an iconic musical (one that was made into a great movie and then remade into a terrible one).
♦ I have an embarrassing confession to make: I only recently started watching (and loving and quoting)
. Better late to the party than never to the party… right?
update: My gut is telling me that a resolution in the David Lynch-Showtime imbroglio is nigh.
That’s a wrap! Please send questions, comments and anonymous tips to askausiello@tvline.com. (
Oliver better get back with his peeps by the end of the season – otherwise what was the point of this whole year???
Please don’t cancel Person of Interest…it’s such a great show!
It has to be ruinously expensive to make. All the main actors, excluding Fusco, are big name actors. B list overall, A list in TV. They were expensive from day 1. And they shoot in NYC. If it were a huge hit, it would be different. But its not, not anymore. I bet the syndication deals aren’t that rich, which leads me to believe it will either be canceled or given a shortened final season.
Hopefully it gets a shortened 13 episodes like the mentalist, they can finish up the series and maybe Shaw’s actress can reappear for an episode or something
I’m with you… POI keeps getting better
Please chat with Mike Kelley!!! I wish it ended when she got Conrads confession and rode off into the sunset with Aiden.
Still praying for you on the loss of your husband. I cant imagine what youve been going thru, but I hope it helps to know people care about you. :)
Of course the chances of Community Season 7 are slim to none. They’ll be busy making the movie!
Do you really have a book coming out winter 2018? haha I’d love to read the tea you spill! And you are so right about Cristina Yang. ABC would market the heck out of her return, so I expect she won’t be there. But her and Addison being MIA would just add on to the sloppy, disappointing pile that killing Derek has delivered. There’s no way those two wouldn’t be at his funeral (Cristina to support Meredith, Addison to say goodbye). But Shonda and her writers stopped caring about good story telling and being consistent a long time ago.
How is it Shonda’s fault if the actors didn’t decide to come back? We don’t know that she didn’t ask them to. They aren’t under contract. She can’t make them.
Lolz, right – like Shonda Rhimes controls Sandra Oh (and Chyler Leigh, who wanted out, and Patrick Dempsey, who kept saying he wanted to focus on race car driving instead of acting, and Katherine Heigl, who wouldn’t stop talking s*** in public about her boss and the work, etc.).
I swear, her shows’ fans love to ignore Shonda when the show is phenomenal (and give all the props to the actors), but then want to blame her for everything that doesn’t go the way they want it to go.
I don’t think Christina will return. Remember one of Christina’s last comments was trying to sway Meredith to pursue her dreams instead of sitting back while Derek pursued his.
My prediction: To get around the Christina situation, Meredith will pack up the kids and go to her.
Maybe Meredith will decide to move in with Cristina, and since Cristina does not like or want kids she will come back to Seattle……..
Bummed about your POI speculation. They can’t end this show. Especially without being able to bring Shaw back. Plus the show is just way too good. Yesterday’s episode was great.
Totally agree. And I’m sick of the networks canceling good shows. POI is awesome and I’m waiting for Shaw’s return.
Also agree! This is one of the few shows that has really risen to the challenge of tackling a conspiracy theory plot-line without losing track of any threads. The characters are some of my favorite on television, and unlike a few other network dramas I follow the writers manage to engage with impossible scenarios that never make me as a viewer feel berserk. They came back from Taraji’s departure with grace and were able to rebound–plus this has been a stellar season. Please CBS no!
Surely how would it look if Cristina is not at Derek’s funeral, not just for Mer but they were bonded by Meredith, they had an understanding.
I’ll never forget my favorite Derek/Cristina moment when they went fishing. They had a bond of their own and Cristina better show up…I’m in tearing up already…FFS this sucks!
If Sandra won’t be back, maybe Meredith is going to her (off camera). I’d be satisfied with that.
This is what I just posted above. There is no way that Christina wouldn’t support Meredith and the only way for that to happen on the show is for Meredith to take the kids and go there. That gets the show to the end of the season, then they pick up at some later time.
Yes, the fictional character would be right there to support her. However, the real-life actress doesn’t necessarily go along with the fictional plan. But who knows, perhaps ABC is actually trying to surprise everyone for once.
The biggest shocker in this AA is the little end line about POI. This is one of a handful of shows I simply can’t wait for each week. While it sorely misses Sarah Shahi’s presence, it has only gotten better this season. Here’s hoping that your worries are misplaced. (Its still the best 10 o’clock show on tv period.)
I’m with you on this. I HAVE to see the Machine take down Samaritan. And I HAVE to see our girl SS back on the show. I NEEd that reunion. Please Mr. Network guys, do the right thing. Give them one more season (at least) to give us a kick-ass season and resolve these storylines. Please don’t leave loyal fans in the dark again. Please.
My guess is Teddy dies (heart attack due to all the stress ?) and his liver will save his former nemesis, Deacon…it is a country show after all. The character has ran its course and this way Maddi’s first dad would be able to save her real one.
Oooh I was totally thinking this while reading the scoop! I’m over Teddy. There isn’t much left to do with his character.
I was never under Teddy (…ha!) and as much as I like Eric Close, I’ve found him pretty useless since the beginning. He could at least make himself useful and save Deacon.
Oh that would be good. I kept thinking why don’t they ask Maddi to give Deacon part of her liver since she is his daughter but then Teddy dying and his liver going to Deacon would be even better!! Love it!
the most far out would be if Luke Wheeler gave part of his liver. Perhaps Teddy gives a piece of his liver in exchange for probation. But my favorite idea would be for it to be Juliette who shares her liver with Deacon, who has really been her person.
Rayna stated to Beverly that she can’t because she’s too young.
““Every time Roy interacts with or allies himself with Team Arrow, there’s a story reason behind it, as opposed to just the assumption that, ‘OK, he’s part of the team now.”
Ray, not Roy. Roy was the other guy. Someone is in denial over their departure! :)
I so agree. I want to know what Mike Kelley would’ve done!
“Newly concerned about PoI renewal” – due to rumblings in the grapevine or just the anemic ratings? At least ABC had the courtesy of telling viewers that Revenge was ending.
WB TV doesn’t like their shows to end without proper ending. Eg Gossip Girl, Fringe… Beside POI is only 10 episodes short of 100. It will be back next year, just how many episodes.
Also, it’ll be incredibly stupid if Shonda and co. don’t at least try to get Sandra Oh to come back at some point. I’m okay with it not being during the funeral, although in what world would Cristina Yang not jump on the first flight to Seattle upon hearing the news. I think Sandra Oh said she was open to it. The show can’t just have Meredith lose every important person in her life. Yes there’s her relationship with Alex which is great and now her sister too, but those don’t compare to Derek and Cristina. They need to convince Sandra to make a return visit.
i think i remember Sandra saying she would be interested in coming back for the series finale, but i was under the impression she was done for a while
I don’t blame her, either. Once you’ve said goodbye to a show, you don’t want to go running back a mere year later.
The promos showed Meredith packing up the kids and leaving. Maybe she’s going to see Cristina! At least that’s what I would love to see!
Okay–I would totally watch a reboot in Switzerland starring Christina Yang! Lol! C’mon Sandra, live the dream for all pf us!
Not too enthused about that Bates Motel scoop, I’m hoping for fireworks and passion not heartbreaking and violent.
Can’t wait for the Sansa and Baelish scene next week..I’m liking this pair this season.
Me too. I thought it was so gross in previous seasons but suddenly I’m interested in it. Perhaps the thought of her with Baelish is much more favorable than the thought of her with Ramsay. At least Baelish cares for her, even if he is a perverted murderer.
I am curious as to how they’ll explain Cristina’s absence…. It would be incredible if she did come back for an ep. Will other former characters come back (addison)??
In an interview (with the Hollywood Reporter I believe) the actress who plays Amelia said that she is visited by someone from PP for the funeral/aftermath of her brother’s death. I would assume Addison, but not sure if Amelia was close to any other characters on PP that might come to comfort her.
What if it’s her ex fiancée! That would be awkward but interesting!
Person of Interest was my favorite show of all time, for the first two seasons. Now I don’t bother with it. Time for it to go. The way of Heroes. They just started adding too many characters, lost their focus, and I don’t care about root, control, etc. Why not just go back to one number or two per week like the first two seasons.
Except the show really never has been like that. Even in season 1 you already had the overarching Corwin/government stories or HR or Decima, etc. going on.
You don’t bother with it, yet you want it to go? Why do you care if it’s still on? Many still think it’s great. It’s actually pretty great this season and last season as well and Root and Shaw are definitely assets to the show in my opinion. Also, there are only four main characters at the moment (John, Harold, Root, Fusco) and I think they do a decent job of giving all of them their fair share of attention
It’s just gotten too convoluted and dark. Finch drank poison to stop Root??? Old Finch would have found a better way.
I am still watching, but just barely. Watch Forever live and POI later. Hopefully next season (if there is one) is lighter.
An artificial intelligence is making their lives miserable. They lost their close friend Carter last year and up until last night they thought they lost Shaw too, not to mention all the crime and gang-related stuff they have to deal with. Of course it’s gonna be darker.
I always thought that Randall’s mentioning his brother at that moment in the Outlander book was disturbing. I’m not sure it was ever fully explained either (only read through book 3 at the moment)
I wonder if they just show everyone finding out…. Then skip to flashes of the funeral… Then skip ahead to the aftermath and reality of Derek’s death after its all done. Sorta like they did on Glee when Cory Montieth died. Then absences won’t be as noticeable. Although I still want a Mer/ Cristina scene at some point please.
I have a feeling that this is exactly how the two-hour episode is going to play out. It’s the only way to get around the “noticeable absences” like Cristina and Addison.
I anticipate a jump-ahead (week or 2?), long enough to allow for Cristina to come and leave, but with all her stuff taking place off-screen.
Ive tried to be a trooper with revenge I really have… ive stuck it out through ups downs weeks off for no reason and for gods sake I even pushed through painful Margeuax…. but I must confess… I lost interest when david came back and then we had 20 different stories running 20 different directions…It was almost like lets throw spaghetti against the wall and see what sticks and thats what story we will go with… I will finish the series in my own time now… but not without the feeling that Emily coulda done sooooooooooooo much better if given more to work with…and I have missed the last 3 episodes… and I will say if she ends up with anyone else but jack this whole show fails…. miserably!
my thought when the teasers show meredith telling the kids they are going away was that she was going to see Christina. I don’t think it would be realistic to expect Sandra Oh back for this.
POI isn’t going anywhere. There will be a season 5 but that is going to be the end.
Bed Bath & Beyond coupons never expire!!
OMG, not Sansa and Baelish! There’s another moment I will avert my eyes from in this show…
I need Littlefinger dead, his skeevyness is just bleh!
I’ve also been worried about POI’s renewal prospects. It’s a great show. Too bad more people aren’t watching it. I hope CBS gives the show at least one more season, even a shorter one.
It sucks that previous seasons aren’t available anywhere else. I missed the start of it and have always been curious to watch it out it isn’t available anywhere!
Agree. I hope Netflix or another provider picks it up so the entire series is available. Definitely worth watching.
I really hope that there’s hope for Alicia and Finn, but I worry that Matthew Goode’s appearances on some Downton eps may put a wrench in that. It would be nice to see Alicia with someone kind and loyal and uncomplicated for a change.
I’m bummed about Revenge! It would be cool to know what his ending would have been. I just hope they give it a good one.
I am keeping my fingers crossed for both POI & Elementary. I think that both
are great . It seems that the current story line on POI is coming to an end
so( hopefully} season 5 will deal with the aftermath and onto new adventures
for the group. Elementary-come on CBS -there is still a lot of life let in that
show. I am glad to see H50 as a safe bet but I give it at most two more seasons.
I figured that it could to season 7 but not as long as the first H5O-12 seasons.
Not sure who the asker was referring to with that Grey’s question concerning Derek’s funeral guests (could have been Cristina as you guessed) but MY mind went immediately to Addison when I read it. Any chance of seeing Derek’s first wife come to say goodbye?? Please say yes!! I’m really missing Kate Walsh on my tv!
Same here! Ever since Bad Judge went off the air, I’ve been jonesing for my Kate Walsh fix. Of course, Addison is her best character, so I would die to see her pop up in Shondaland again!!
I assume they’re going to pull a little TV trickery in showing any funeral scenes. There’s no way Cristina, Addison, Derek’s sisters, his mother, or even Izzie would miss it.
I’m with you except for the Izzie part. She and Derek never had any moments and she’s been gone for years. Burke I could see because he and Derek were friends as much as two ego maniacs could be but not Izzie.
I don’t necessarily disagree with your point about the amount of time passing since McDreamyhair saved Izzie, but OTOH, 1a) he saved Izzie 1b) with a cutting edge technique that probably in and of itself put him (and the case) in some medical journals and 2) the original five interns — Meredith, Cristina, Izzie, George and Karev were all really tight until George died. I mean, seriously, this five-person class of interns stayed together and mostly roomed together at Meredith’s house *for five years.* By contrast, Jo and Stephanie’s five-person class is down from five to just the two of them in two years. And, in Izzie’s case, one of her mentors (all the Attendings are mentor/instructors) saved her life. There’s no way, even six years later that a real-life Izzie wouldn’t come back for a real-life Derek’s funeral. Quite the opposite, in fact — many estranged people come back for funerals specifically to try to mend fences with those who survived or otherwise test the waters for if they’re ready to come back.
Conversely, since Izzie didn’t come back for Lexie’s funeral — and, moreover, it would have been fine for her to skip that one because, well, she didn’t really know Lexie (Izzie was half-firedhalf-quit during the competition between the Seattle Grace and Mercy West interns to keep their places in the combined program when the hospitals merged) — it’s the difference that McDreamyhair is a far more important member of Meredith’s family in Izzie’s life than Lexie was that actually makes it *more* meaningful for Izzie and thus, more likely that she would attend. Even at the expense of having to face Karev for even a couple of hours.
Also, as an Izzie fan, I would be thrilled if we just heard in passing from some character or another after the funeral — Bailey, the Chief, Addison (if she makes a cameo), Cristina (if she makes a cameo) or even Jo or Stephanie (Izzie’s case wouldn’t be unknown to interns at the same hospital that she had her surgery in and Stephanie, having been heavy on neuro hours the last few months assisting Amelia on Dr. Herman’s case, would likely know Izzie’s case by heart) — something along the lines of “Can you believe that Izzie actually came to the funeral?! I wish she would have stayed for the wake, but she looked like she was walking on lava every time she even looked at Karev.” It would be an earned hat-tip/infodump/fan service of the non-manga, non-pervy variety to just acknowledge that Izzie and her current status *should* be referenced in the episode due to her status as one of Derek’s triumphs.
What kind of nigh is the Twin Peaks revival coming to? Bad nigh or good nigh? lol
Cristina will be there for Mer. But it will be her body double from the back with her trademark hair and Owen next to her. No Oh.
If Christina isn’t there, then it’ll prove to me that this whole Derek dying thing was a rush thing on Shonda’s part because of the rumors of diva behavior or bad behavior or whatever. She obviously wrote this very quickly as the TV guide notes had to change for the “new” death/funeral episodes from what was orginally shown. I’d sure as h*ll like to know the truth behind all this.
That makes no sense. If Sandra Oh didn’t want to come back, it’s not like Shonda Rhimes could force her against her will. She’s a grown woman who made the conscious decision to move on from a job that she had for a decade. She might not want to pop back in yet. I remember her saying that she would come back for the finale, but she seemed like she wanted to move on to new projects and new characters for now. And Shonda can’t base her current storylines that don’t even involve old characters on the wants and needs of old cast members. That would be dumb.
I guess I expected there would be a slim chance of getting another season out of Community, but it’s a damn shame if we don’t. I don’t want to say we’ve got some of the best episodes ever out of this sixth season from Yahoo, but we’ve definitely got some real high quality episodes that can hold their own alongside some of the classics.
Watching Nashville, and I think I just figured out where Deacon’s liver is going to come from. Crazy, mind-blowing!
Oh no–I hope Person of Interest moves to “renewed”
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Do NOT cancel POI. This is the one show that’ll pee me off the most. Please do not cancedl my Person of Interest.
Yes it would have been awesome to find out what Mike Kelly’s Revenge endgame would have been.
I neeeeeed to know if Stana Katic is going to sign on for another season of Castle. Is there some kind of deadline we’ll know for sure by?
Normally abc reveals the fate of their shows in the May Upfronts.
Thanks for The Good Wife teasers. I still can’t read the tea leaves re: Finn and Alicia or Peter for that matter. After a promising start with Alicia and Finn, things took such an odd turn. Honestly, I would be happy if Matthew Goode remains on the show and Finn has a meatier role next season. No one is ever romantically happy for long anyway or if they are, such as Diane, it mainly takes place off camera!
I’d been wondering if we’d see “Community” again. Doesn’t surprise me its chances aren’t very strong, which is a shame, but we made it to six seasons, so if that’s all the further it goes, then I’m okay with it.
As for that “Bates Motel” news? You have me VERY intrigued. And very worried. Oh, dear.
Now that REVENGE is cancelled, would ABC be ridiculous enough to renew FOREVER? I’m going to guess NO, but it might not be that expensive to make. The salaries may be low. I don’t think it should be back. What do all of you think?
It’s a WB show make in NY. As much as I love the show, I’m realistic with my expectations.
There hasn’t been any new spoilers on Bones lately. :/
It wasn’t like ABC advertised Derek dying. So who’s to say they would do the same thing with surprise appearances for the funeral? But I agree. It’ll probably happen off screen or involve some trickery to avoid not having certain actors available
Question: What are the chances of a seventh season of Community? —Eddie
Well good. I love Community but you don’t just mess with #sixseasonsandamovie
Re: Christina, it’s frustrating but also something I’ve come to accept over the years with long running shows and departed characters. I remember many years ago on Falcon Crest when Maggie died, not one(!) of her two adult children were at the funeral and I was just amazed a show would let that happen…but I know better now…actors move on, have other projects, availability is limited or sometimes, they just don’t want to come back…
Oh well. Sandra Oh in the series finale is something I will definitely be down with.
Without the Alex line? But that explains Randall better than anything!
It would be Addison I’d like to see back for Derek’s funeral… but I think that’s even less likely… :(
Fingers crossed about a David Lynch/Twin Peaks resolution. (I’m assuming you mean a good resolution, or you would have phrased that with a little more dread).
