Chapter 4: Expendable
"What?! How could this happen?!" 野马 was clutching the landline phone in his gloved hand. His other hand was balled up in a fist, pressed onto his desk.
"The Führer ordered his release."
The man on the other end of the phone took a drag from his cigarette and exhaled. "I'm not sure what he's up to. He was released three days ago. " He tapped the end of his cigarette, a few ashes trickling to the ground. Roy shook his head; wrenching up his forehead.
"Have 你 made it to Holt yet?" The Colonel asked with a sigh.
"No, we're almost a day's train ride away from it, no sign of Fullmetal yet either." The blonde smoker stuck his cancer stick back between his lips ad he scratched his head inside the phone booth.
"Alright, keep an eye out. He'll be sorry when he returns."
"So, EDWARD," Hayden put heavy emphasis on his name; she wasn't too happy with him trying to elude her.
"What was your problem with Ling?"
She pranced innocently along side of Edward, her arms behind her back as she swung herself around like the breeze. Hayden's golden tresses trailing behind her hips. She licked her rosy lips as she flicked her eyes toward Edward. She was fishing for an answer.
"He was being annoying, so I left him there. " She frowned. Not exactly the answer she was looking for. She decided to prod even further.
"So what's he doing hanging around with you? I mean, HE seems to know everything about you..."
He scowled at her. She finally poked at the right place. She had finally gotten him back to being angry, and she could probably push some information out of him.
She shrugged; as innocent and carefree as could be, of course.
"And I'm sure 你 know everything about him...because 你 exchanged your information...right?" She just kept in line with him, trying to match him step for every lively step.
"So it seems natural that-"
"Just shut up already, will ya? It's not any of your business and 你 haven't told us anything about you. So shut it." She huffed. Hayden drew back the right corner of her mouth like the draw cord on drapes. She cocked a tiny grin, 展示 her canines as she practically skipped beside him.
"Fine."
Ed pointed a metallic finger toward the townsquare. "You make yourself busy here, buy some 食物 for the trip 或者 something, Al and I are gonna get some tickets for the train to Resembool. My arm might be okay, but it never hurts to make sure." Edward handed her some change. Hayden just nodded and cupped the cool money in her hands. She hadn't realized just how cold it was; she was used to the climate along the northern border.
"Okay, fine."
"Yeah, cya Colonel." Havoc hung up the phone half-heartedly and strolled out of the phone booth; closing the door with a click. He stuck his hand into his pocket and fished for his Menthol Lights. His fingers brushed against the package with a crinkling noise; he half smiled as he pulled them out. He took his pick of the filtered tobacco sticks and propped it out of its box. He glanced sideways out of the corner of his azure eyes; catching a glimpse of a blonde female. He couldn't help but smirk; brow cocked. Havoc, being the womanizer he was; tapped the cigarette back into its package.
Hayden was busy wandering through the bustling plaza, taking in the cool breeze that brushed through her hair, in almost the same way that Ling had done. She smiled to herself, she enjoyed the feel of the ever-so-light sun on her face. It had just barely broke though the thin layer of 灰蒙蒙, 阴云密布 clouds. Nevertheless, she drank in the feather light shine. Hayden had ended up at a small bakery stand set up amongst the busy 圈, 圈子 of shops. She had already accumulated a bag of sweets and had it propped against her hip, holding it with her arm.
"Hello, Miss."
A tall fair haired man beamed down at her.
"Uhm, hello; Sir." Hayden could already smell the tobacco rolling off his breath. He wore the standard military uniform, his hands shoved in his pockets. Hayden immediately caught her breath in her throat, a military man was talking to her. What could he possibly want?
"I couldn't help but notice how 你 were struggling with that bag..." Havoc shrugged his shoulders. "So I thought maybe I could help." He shot her a friendly smirk as he held out his large hands to her. The blonde teen could only laugh awkwardly while blushing like mad. Jean took the bag from her. "Wow." He shook his head in awe.
"What?" Havoc looked down at her with half-lidded eyes.
"You're just...really beautiful."
She was off again. Cackling oddly with her bright red cheeks. "Look, I actually have to be somewhere; would 你 want to go to the train station with me? Just to say goodbye? Or...would 你 want to go with me?" He eyed her face for a response. The train station, that's where Edward and his brother were. In that 分裂, 拆分 second, Edward came running up to the center of town; hair tied back up from a piece of ribbon he had transmuted.
"We got the-uh?" Havoc's eyes widened as Edward's met his. Ed sank his teeth into his bottom lip; his eyes moving spastically. Alphonse lurched at Hayden, swooping her up 由 her legs and tossing her over his shoulder.
"Fullmetal! Wait!"
"Fullmetal?"
