It's not that I think he wouldn't be brave enough to go in his Fathers place...Shang is all about honor, dignity and respect. I think he would let his Father go because technically it would be the right thing to do.

Sorry this question is so long, I was trying to make it clear. Obviously if Shang's father was the captain he wouldn't take his place, and obviously Shang could be recruited if he was a man, so I was trying to explain if Shang was in Mulan's EXACT situation- if for some reason Shang couldn't go.
I agree completely with Dani, BUT I think Shang might think about it.

I think because he is so brave, he would go out and take his father's place. I also know his army backround with his real father wouldn't count but he is a great captain if that counts for anything.

He's big on duty and honor for his father. He would honor his father's choices. No matter how much he hated it.

Because he's nothing like Mulan. He doesn't have the guts to break the rules and respects his dad too much to do it. But it wouldn't be bad since he's a guy it was only bad for Mulan to do it because she's a girl. It would only be bad for Shang if he was a child which he obviously isn't.

I never said he lacks bravery I just said he lacks the guts to do anything out of tradition even if it was necessary. Besides like I said he'd never be in this situation because he's a guy.

Well lets see Fa Zu is an injuryed man who will die if he went off to war and Shang is of the right age and is strong, I think that would necessary. Also for the third time take this into account, HE'S A MAN THEY ARE ALLOWED TO TAKE THEIR FATHER'S PLACE WITHOUT BREAKING THE RULES! Why would he be in Mulan's situation in the first place? and obviously you have no understanding about ethics in China, especially in that age, Shang would really honestly think he was doing the noble, RIGHT thing by not taking his father's place. It was considered a great honor to die in war

humm, this is the hardest one, i'm really not sure, it could work both ways, keeping his father's honor = keeping his father alive.

I agree with CuteDiana.

I imagine he would hesistate much more than Mulan, but in the end, he would do the right thing (just like in the movie, in the end he listens to Mulan even when he feels humiliated by her)

I really am torn about this question too. I think Shang's honor to his father might win out but he'd really regret it.

He would take his father's place but it would be easier for him cause he wouldnt do anything illegaly.
