But that's why I love her, because she is selfish sometimes. XD Not all the time, just sometimes.

I think Ariel is extremely selfish. She never cares about anybody else's opinions or feelings, she does whatever she feels like doing. Actually exactly her selfishness makes her such an annoying character.

Oh so she's annoying for being human! Anyway most of the time she's not selfish but sometimes she is. But everyone is at least a little bit selfish. How she saved Eric was completely selfless because she knew she had nothing to gain.

All people say she is selfish. Cool, she needs to. If she wasn't selfish she would NEVER went to the surface, she would NEVER made her dream come true and she would still waiting for someone to save her. Snowi, Cindy & Aurora most like a lot of people because they are not selfish (curious, they don't have a lot of fans), that's the reason the only way they were "saved" was by other person (a man, actually). Ariel was the first princess after the sexual revolution, when women finally could be taken as a complete equal to the men (not just stay in home cleaning and cooking). If we look at it closely, we will find that if we weren't selfish, searching for justice, we would still in home, without having the oportunnity to work or other things that wasn't allowed in the 40's, 50's, 60's...
We all need to be a little selfish, and Ariel is, that's a very intelligent desicion if u ask me.

Oh, the sexual revolution is quite different. Women were selfish as a group. Their goal was equality and freedom from the centuries old traditions and beliefs. They did that because their lives in a lot of cases sucked, they were not allowed to choose what to do with their future, and were forced by the society to play a certain role in it, despite that many of them actually wanted to achieve something in their lives.
Ariel's thing is just a selfish and spoiled little brat's stubbornness to have things always her way. She did not fight for freedom or better life, she had them already under the sea. She did not want to be equal to men, she just wanted to be the wife of the random man she saw dancing with his dog on a ship. She chose to hurt and leave her whole family and all of her friends behind, without caring about them. And that is extremely selfish and rude.
So Ariel's choices and the sexual revolution cannot really be compared, because they are just two extremely different things.

lol Ariel haters v.s Ariel lovers, that should be fun !

i completely disagree with @BelleAnastasia, about Ariel.
that 'random man she saw dancing with his dog on a ship' called love from first sight, we don't see people judging Aurora for dancing with a stranger or Snow White for loving a man who just sang to her, or Cindy falling for someone she didn't even know, all of these called 'love from first sight'.
and Ariel did NOT 'chose to hurt and leave her whole family and all of her friends behind, without caring about them', she thought about them when she was talking to Ursula, and we can see CLEARLY that Ursula's song effected her, it was a reckless/teenagy decision more than 'selfish and rude'

Lol, let the fight begin :D

Anyway, people DO judge Snow White and Cinderella and Aurora, that's why these couples are usually at the bottoms of most people's favorite DP couples lists. And it is not called love at first sight, but lust at first sight. To love somebody, you have to know their personality, their dreams, their weaknesses... which clearly is not the case in these situations. For lust at first sight you only need a hot boy/girl, with a sexy body and a pretty face, which clearly is the case here.
And it seems to me that her 2 seconds indecisiveness and the sentence "If I become human I'll never be with my father or sisters again" or something like this does not really show whether she cares about them or not. Because in the next moment she's like "Oh, well. I know I have family and friends, who love me and who have taken care of me for 16 years, but what the hell, who cares about them, I'm going to risk everything and chase after that random, unknown guy I have barely met."
I honestly think if she loved them she would have thought more about them, and about how her decision is going to affect them. But again, she's far too selfish to care about anybody else, but herself.

how it would be called love from first sight if it wasn't actually 'love from first sight' ? if they know the other's personality and everything it wouldn't call love from first sight, and 'to know their personality, their dreams, their weaknesses' is called falling in love, which's completly different, and highly disagree with you about those couples being in the bottom, they are on the top of many lists, including mine.
we were talking about her being selfish and now we are doubting her love for her familly ? wow ! again, she fell in love with that random guy, she's 16 in love, always wanted to be part of his world, and when she loved him she had a motive to risk and actually tries to be up there, she just found a kick to make the first step of being there, and again, Ursula's song effected her a lot, otherwise we would have seen her agree without Ursula saying anything, if she was as selfish as you guys are saying.

@CuteDiana: In my opinion BelleAnastasia is right in saying that Snow/Prince and Cinderella/Charming are at the bottom of many people's lists.. Ariel/Eric are certainly almost always liked more than those 2 couples (from what i've seen anyway)

oh man.... we started a fight... [AGAIN!] haha I think Ariel is the most complicated princess (or heroine) to talk about. we love her or we hate her (well I do like her and she is one of my favorites but I'm not like: wow! I'll fight for her until dead)
I don't like love at first sight. Actually I believe it doesn't work over time. Ariel didn't fall for Eric and just say "oh well, he's hot. I will leave my family and live with him, doesn't matter he don't even know who am I" she ALWAYS wanted to be part of the human world. I don't know how this will look but I think is kind of Jane's desicion, she let London and all for being with Tarzan. Not just fall in love with him, she found her place in the jungle and knew she were be happy there. Ariel knew her place was in the surface, and that thought solidified after seeing Eric and she knew that was her destiny.
P.S. it's good to argue, not to fight. so hope we're not hurting anybody's feelings, we are kinda sentimental down here x3

That's what I meant, to love somebody you have to know the person. If you don't know the person it is lust.
I don't think Ariel is like Jane in that sense. Jane spent time in the jungle, she got to know Tarzan and in the end she had the knowledge and experience to decide where she'll be happier. And her father stayed with her. Ariel was not that familiar with Eric's world, she thought it was perfect. I bet she wasn't prepared for menstrual cycles or blisters.

Yes, she's selfish, but I stopped disliking her for that, now i dislike her partly because she's boring

And not everyone is at least a little selfish, there are people who aren't selfish at all

Ariel is as selfish as the ocean is wet. Does whatever she wants, whenever she wants, however she wants, with no thought of the consequences, no care of how her actions affect others, and even blows people off whenever they try to tell her how her actions affect them. (Scowls and crosses her arms when Sebastian tells her how skipping out on the concert made him a laughing stock.)

Even when people risk themselves to help her (even though she never does anything to help them, unless it's to bail them out of a dangerous situation she put them in in the first place, like Flounder to the shark or Sebastian to Grimsby's plate), she shows little to no gratitude for their help or concern for their well-being. (Sebastian nearly gets KILLED by Chef Louis in the kitchen because he agreed to stay and help her woo the prince like she wanted, and when he says "I hope you appreciate everything I do for you!" she flippantly ignores him and focuses on her fluffy bed instead. He's literally risking his life to help her and she can't even be bothered to feel thankful).

Honestly, Ariel is one of the most selfish Disney CHARACTERS I've seen, not just Disney princesses.
