迪士尼公主 Sometimes Flynn/Rapunzel's characters are criticized for being unoriginal. Do 你 agree that one of them/both are unoriginal?

Although Rapunzel is a mashup of all the other princesses, which ends up making her an original entity to me. IDK, might change my vote . . .

*sigh* how to explain this
Rapunzel is unoriginal, plain and simple. She's great, but there's nothing new about her, nothing she does, no quality she has, that another princess doesn't have/do.
Flynn is a little harder to explain. First his dream of wanting a lot of money is obviously not original, Naveen had the same aspirations, and the way he gave it up for Rapunzel is the same as Naveen. His actual personality/sense of humor....is maybe original, but very expected. When I watched the movie, I liked it, but I wasn't like wow! groundbreaking! he had a very predictable personaity.

As for it annoying me....yes, a little, but I still like both of their characters. I'm not annoyed by them as characters, more annoyed at just the fact that disney just can't be as original as they used to.

Yeah, it bugged me how Mary-Sueish Rapunzel was. She really had no character and was pretty much like any other princess. I didn't think much about Flynn, but now I kind of realize that is is pretty unoriginal is his "I made myself someone else because I didn't like who I was" kind of deal.

I can honestly say that the movie overall is made with such exceptionally high quality that it doesn't bother me in the least. I think Tangled is the perfect love child of a modern comedy and a traditional fairytale, and I applaud Disney for finding that balance.

@boolander: Exactly! (about Rapunzel) She didn't break any new ground. Plus, everyone likes her in one millisecond, whereas the others don't have that. (except maybe Aurora)

Personally I think you can argue almost all the princesses but Snow White are unoriginal if you want. For me it depends on whether I look at the stories and characters after breaking them down or as the whole they combine to make.
For example, Jasmine's starting point is essentially Ariel's. Privileged but unsatisfied, no mother, loving father whose inability to understand what his daughter wants from life causes fights, runs away, her romance is a mix of love at first sight and getting to know each other, divides fans on whether she's spoilt or just fairly fighting for what she wants from life, and there are more similarities too but I don't consider Jasmine unoriginal, and my opinion of her is different to my opinion of Ariel. I see similarities with previous stories in almost all the Disney princess movies if I look for it.
When you break their traits into separate chunks Rapunzel and Flynn share a lot with previous characters, but for my enjoyment at least, the way those separate characteristics combined was into characters I found fresh enough to enjoy a lot. I see where those who disagree are coming from though, but it wasn't a problem for me :)

I don't disect the characters as much as some people here do (not that that's a bad thing). I feel Flynn and Rapunzel are both mashups of multiple Disney characters and I do agree that they don't really bring anything new and different compared to other Disney princesses/princes, but it was still a good movie, so I'm not entirely bothered.

Sure, there are small traits that other characters have, but they're too small to really matter.

@Mermaid-Tail, but all princesses brought something new. Rapuzel hasn't. She's just very bland and boring character IMO

In my opinion the character her separate traits combine to make is new. No character has been that mix before. Like if you mix the dorkiness of Mulan with the sweetness of Snow white and the determination of Ariel you get a character that isn't actually like any of them, because you've added characteristics they don't share.
There are also things she does that in my opinion none of the others would (things like blackmailing a stranger into what she thinks will be a very dangerous journey so she can fulfill a minor wish, being the only 'trapped' princess to not just be happy when free and actually suffer emotionally from it)
I don't think they all did bring any specific new thing anyway. Using Jasmine again as an example, I don't personally find any of her individual traits or basic plot points unique, only what they combine to make is unique in my opinion.
Again, I do get the point of those who disagree though, this is just how I see it :)

^^ I think that's not what she meant. Rapunzel didn't have a single trait another princess didn't have. (I don't include talents like the painting/candlemaking/etc) While combined, she did have a new personality that was different, she didn't have any actions I couldn't see another princess doing. Jasmine was really the first princess to continuously speak her mind and give attitude, Belle was the first "intellectual" princess, first to not want romance, (cough cough) Ariel was the first proactive princess....each of those traits make them memorable for something. This isn't to say Rapunzel isn't memorable. I'm pretty sure Jasmine may be upset if she had been free longer, but she was out what, 2 hours? I also think Cinderella would have felt guilty if she ran away.
We're not saying that she isn't a new character, we're saying that there was nothing slightly groundbreaking about her. Each of the other princesses brought something new to the table.

Flynn sort of the is the sarcastic male archetype (only not funny), and Rapunzel is very similar to other modern Disney heroines.
