Please read: I really think they should. So far there are 9 Princesses, all of whom have different nationalities but they are ALL thin. They should be different from the norm and what people expect and make an overweight Princess. It just brings out bad messages - In order to find love and have a good life, you need to be stick-thin and beautiful. Would Cinderella have escaped her Stepmother's clutches if she was fat and ugly? I doubt it. The Prince wouldn't have chose her. Would Aladdin have fallen in love with Jasmine if she were fat? No, he liked her because of her graceful looks. etcetcetc..

Oh and there are a few cases of boys NOT being handsome in Disney movies. For example, Quasimodo. So its okay for boys to be ugly but have hearts of gold, but if you're a heroine, its required that you have to be thin and beautiful (Props to Dweeb for that comment!!! she will sue me if i dont haha) it doesnt really make sense. I know thats not really about someone being overweight, but its still different from the ordinary.

Does anybody else agree? Btw sorry if the question confuses you. I dont mean overweight as in OBESE, I just mean overweight in Disney's sense, since all of the Princesses are stick-thin. Is it some requirement that all the Princesses/Heroines have to be thin?

Reasonings for images:
Evil Queen - "Yes, make fat Princesses. Then I'll be the fairest in all the land!"
Jasmine - "No! I have such an unrealistic body, don't make overweight princesses!"
Simba - "Who cares? I'M A LION!"

No, because being overweight is unhealthy. They should make a big-boned or curvy princess, sure! But not overweight in an unhealthy sense.

The fact is even the fat little girls won't like that because then when they're playing at recess and deciding who's who everyone's like "And we all know which princess YOU'LL be playing..."

^ Yes but thats the same with anything. For example, to the black person in the class - "We all know which princess YOU'LL be playing" and to the redhead in the class - "We all know which princess YOU'LL be playing!" y'know?? Its better than not being a Princess at all! Id rather someone say to me (if I was overweight) - "We all know what Princess you'll be playing!" than have someone say to me "Haha, none of the Princesses are fat, sorry you cant play" ...

One of the reasons they made Tiana black was to have a bit more diversity in the Princess lineup. Why do all of the Princesses/Heroines have to be thin? I just dont understand.

In one of my upcoming disney sequel reviews I mention that I think Anastasia's romance story should really have been reserved for a new Disney Princess. The fact that she isn't considered beautiful but still finds love is an incredibly valuable message. I'm absolutely 100% for a princess who is heavier set, disabled, or whatever but has a complex about it yet rises above it WITHOUT going through some magical transformation in the end. That even people who are 'different' can be beautiful to the right person.

You both make great points. Alafastanzio, I definitely think the reason they shouldn't have used that Anastasia story for her is because little girls will think "She used to be a mean, evil villain" and won't want to follow her lead.

There's a difference to being over weight and being overweight compared to a Disney Princess. My reaction to the question itself, should one be overweight is no, why should they promote poor health? They should do a range of realistically weighted princesses, but doing one who is over weight (so, that's automatically an unnhealthy one, once it's OVERweight) is no better than doing an underweight one in terms of the bad message it sends. Especially as being overweight is a big issue in the western world. I wouldn't like to see something that causes ill health endorsed by a Disney character.
Some of the princesses have healthy figures(Pocahontas has a healthy, athletic look, and Cinderella is slim without being skinny) and that's the main thing I want. That they appear healthy. It's possible to have weight diversity while remaining in the healthy range. They could fit more diversity in there without straying into overweight. I don't think they should continue to do princesses who look underweight, because I agree some of them do, but I don't think the way to fix that is to go too far to the other end of the scale and do an overweight princess.

About their attractiveness, I feel like maybe that's a seperate thing (since there are many stunning bigger women, and more than a few fugly slim women). I personally think they can do more good for young people's esteem by each being beautiful despite their diversity than one would do being ugly. Like as it is they've shown you can be beautiful if with a wide range of features. I feel like it helps a girls esteem more to say "she is ___ like me and she's beautiful. I can be beautiful even if I'm ____" which I like the idea of more than a little girl thinking "she did great even though she's ugly like me". Like when I was little I had red hair, I grew out of it but used to get teased when I was younger. Seeing Ariel as a pretty red head did more for my esteem than seeing an ugly character do well would have, becase as a child I think it was healthier for me to think red heads can be pretty than for me to think ugly people can do ok too. Especially since in my opinion it's incredibly rare for someone to have no spark of attractiveness. Even people who are far from traditional beauty can usually show it in their own way, and I think encourageing them to see that is better than sort of having them accept they're ugly and be represented by an unattracive heroine.
I'm all for more weight diversity, and seeing them stray further from conventional attractiveness than they have so far, but personally don't think going full on overweight or full on unnatractive is the right way to go for Disney. I'd be cool if they chose to, but it's not something I'd actively hope for.

Wow you made some very great points! But btw I sort of rushed the question I think, because I didn't mean unhealthily overweight, I just meant a bit plump in comparison to the other Disney Princesses. "/ But I do see what you mean about the self-esteem, that is a VERY good point.

Er, in my overly long comment of rambles (sorry, it's 11 here, I'm about to go to bed.Being tired makes me ramble uncontrollably) I just adressed the original question about the weight thing, and not your comments where you clarified that you weren't talking about being unhealthily overweight. I wanted to say, someone I think would be a good weight to model for a new Disney Princess, someone who is further from what they've shown so far but still a healthy weight is Miracle Laurie who played Mellie on Dollhouse. Someone mentioned her somewhere else on Fanpop as a good example somene who isn't stick thin, who has curves and is still healthy looking and I agree. If hers is the kind of figure you meant, someone who is bigger than what's been shown but still healthy then that I could completely get on board with. I think she's lovely looking. I've really talked myself into a Disney princess with her figure, because it would add more diversity and I think she has a really beautiful figure too.
(for those unfamiliar with her, I'm too sleepy *cough*lazy*cough* to link an image, so I hope you don't mind googling if you want to know who I mean)

^^absolutely agree with mermaid-tail. It promotes an unhealthy image. If you want to create an unattractive princess who can still find love, thats fine by me, but not by being overweight. I think the princess should maybe have a big nose, or weird hair, or whatever. Something that's not a health concern.

Princesslullaby, I agree with your second point about having a large or horrible feature but I didnt mean unhealthily overweight. I just meant overweight in comparison to the other Disney Princesses, curvy and big boned. So not like Megara :P I cant change the question though :(

it would make sense since in medival times thats what was considered beauty. (but she'd have to be rich otherwise it would make no sense) of coarse they shouldn't make her too big because A: it wouldn't be as gracefull animation and B: if she was too big thats just not healthy

How about just AVERAGE weight? Not "big boned" or "chubby". Just someone that looks like every girl in the world that eats healthy.

We only think about this stuff because we're older. When I was little, I wouldn't think "wow, I wish there was a chubby princess just like me!" Frankly, I didn't care. They were pretty princesses that made me feel good because their dreams came true.

So not chubby, just regular. Normal. Would that be too much to ask?

All the heroes in disney are a healthy weight. Are the girls slim? Yes. Are they unhealthy? No. Is being over weight unhealthy? Yes. I don't think being overweight should be seen by little girls as something good because it's not good.

Also "curvy" is a shape. All the disney girls are curvy: bigger chest, small waist, bigger hips.

For the last time, I didnt mean unhealthy!! I just meant overweight in Disney's sense.. in comparison to what the characters are now. I know they are curvy but some of them are so unrealistic looking.. for example, Jasmine. And Megara. I know Megara isnt a Princess but shes a good example as she is very Curvy but is the most abnormally skinny heroine I've ever seen. So curvy does not automatically mean a little overweight in Disney's point of view.

And people interpret it in different ways. By overweight I just meant more curvy and more big boned and more plump than the ones they have now, jeez. Your comment just makes me seem really stupid. And I didn't mean curvy in Megara's sense (she's one of the most beautiful Heroines in my opinion but that doesnt mean she doesnt look like a toothpick - curves or not!)

Your not stupid, I understand.

I think a more curvy princess would be really nice. My only worry is that, like people on this site, it would be taken the wrong way. Because it wouldn't be a pretty sight if Disney got called out for making a "fat" princess. I wonder what fairy tale she would be in . . .

I dunno. When I was small, I never really paid attention to how skinny they were. I barely started looking at that when I became a teenager. I didn't even pay attention to Megara's body until I was older and was all "That's impossible". In The Little Mermaid III, Ariel's mom was quite full figured, from what I remember. Do you want the next princess like that, or a bit more bigger boned?

I never really pay attention either, I don't really mind what the princesses look like. I'm just confused as to why it seems to be almost a requirement for all of the Princesses/Heroines to be thin. And yeah I sort of mean like Ariel's mum in her third movie. It's not that I want the next Princess to be a bit more biggerboned, its just I think it would be nice to add a bit more diversity to the lineup. It doesnt even have to be a Princess, just a Heroine thats not abnormally thin like Megara or someone. And by the way, Im not dissing Megara because shes actually one of my favourite Heroines.

Yes I do. If anything, big boned. There ARE people out there who are big boned naturally, that doesn't necessarily mean they eat a lot. Woman can be beautiful and still be largely built. I think it intimidates little girls to be thin (in some cases) to have all of these princesses so skinny. The closest thing I've seen to a medium size is Pocahontas.

I agree with Mermaid-Tail about the weight thing. The next princesses could maybe be "normal" weight, not OVERweight. I mean, when I think overweight, I tend to think obese. And I am not a skinny girl by any means, I'll tell you straight-up that I'm like an 8-10 in clothing, and sometimes even a 12 with some designers (I really think they should standardize clothing sizes). I am a busty so that makes it difficult to find shirts that A). I like and B). Look good. I, personally, don't believe that Disney Princesses contributed at all to any insecurities I have. All girls (and guys too) have insecurities about their appearances no matter how skinny and/or attractive they are. That's just the way it is. I know from my experience that there are lots of highs and lows when it comes to your opinion of your appearance. Sometimes I go through like 5 different opinions in less than an hour: I look gorgeous...I'm hideous...Ohhh that looks pretty!...Shield your eyes!...What the heck was that?... Eh, I look ok...Wow I am BEAUTIFUL... and so on. I noticed, even though it's Pixar and not Disney exactly though they are owned by Disney now, that Princess Merida in Brave is not gorgeous/beautiful/pretty at least in the traditional sense. I was a little disappointed when they showed her finished look. But that proves that Princesses aren't all amazingly perfect. Plus, (and I don't like to think about it realistically, but some people do) real Princesses were often in-bread to keep the "royal bloodline" so no, they were not perfect...

I do NOT think that they should make an overweight princess. Disney is supposed to teach kids lessons and being overweight is unhealthy. There are other ways to show that you don't have to be gorgeous to live happily ever after. We can't control our facial features but we can control our health.

I don't like that term "overweight'. But I would love a thick curvy princess. Like Ashley Graham, Tara Lynn curvy. I think it would show that everyone is different and we need to learn to accept each other. Kids have a habit on teasing girls for being different. Like if she has freckles they will make fun of her but now you have Rapunzel who is princess that has freckles and buck teeth. Merida's hair is red and frizzy. That is very empowering to girls. I don't think people realize how merida may be even more special to Black girls with natural kinky hair. tiana never wore her hair down so her hair was never brought out. So why not make a sexy thick princess for the chubby girls?

I love how subliminally this questions already tells you you are suppose to pick no. No answer has a picture of the beautiful princess jasmine but the yes answer has a picture of the evil witch in Sleeping Beauty. and The I don't Know is just a random pic of Simba. So you are going to pick No because the pictures sort of seduce you into clicking it while the Yes answer turns you off from clicking it cause it's a pic of the witch meaning that if you pick yes than you are a bad person and evil. Yes we should strive to have everyone look the same and not accept anyone that doesn't look like us but i bet 90% of the people in this fanclub are overweight, glasses wearing, freckled faced, plain jane, nerdy women and teens that don't really have a a ton of boyfriends and always wanted to be apart of the popular crowd. If you don't want a princess in your image you are just saying you don't like yourself very much and don't want to feel empowered. No you feel that you must change yourself to fit this Disney princess/model look and not accept yourself as beauty as you already are even if you have one eyebrow or big feet or wide hips or an actual stomach. This is not about being beautiful in the inside it's about feeling beautiful and being beautiful in your own way and not somebody else's way.

^ I forgot I even made this question but you are most definitely over-analyzing. Considering I picked 'yes' it sort of makes the first part of your comment entirely irrelevant (unless of course you're saying that I'm calling myself a bad & evil person). Btw, I definitely agree with everyone here about the term 'overweight', it definitely wasn't the right term to use, I should have just used "larger" or something, but meh I can't change it unless I create a time-turner and go back in time 3 years.

"but i bet 90% of the people in this fanclub are overweight, glasses wearing, freckled faced, plain jane, nerdy women and teens that don't really have a a ton of boyfriends and always wanted to be apart of the popular crowd."

^ That was a completely unnecessary comment to make. Not to mention untrue, you definitely mustn't have seen the "Getting to Know" articles on here, I'd say 90% of the 'active' (back then/now) members are very attractive people. The other 10% I haven't seen.

Oh and ugh @ my first comment & my other comments here- I hate seeing older comments that I made on Fanpop. Criiiiiiiiinging so bad right now. hahah.

Hell yeah, bring it on!

As long as Disney has no problem making its villains overweight (ahem, Ursula), they should be fair and make an overweight princess, too.

In fact, Disney heroines/princesses seem to be the only subset in the Disney universe that is immune to being overweight -- you've got big villains, big sidekicks, big parents, big siblings, big everything.

If Disney is serious about staying relevant, they need to make characters (especially heroines) that speak to a changing demographic.

Or something.
